Some of you may have heard that a particular affair site was hacked, ruining people. But this got me ....

Security researcher Per Thorsheim posted in his blog on Tuesday that the dumped data contained an account that he was using on Ashley Madison for research purposes, and that he'd verified several of the accounts contained in the dump were real.

Yeah I do.

I signed up for it with a throw away email a few years ago when it was in the paper, had a look round, went to delete the account, found they charged you to delete accounts, laughed and went "I bet that stuffs some people over, glad I don't use one email address for everything" and never thought of it again until the recent controversy.

I also believe him.

If he was on the site for real you can be sure that his activities would be untraceable. Burner email address, an anonymous credit card, and an untraceable vpn or a burner phone and sim card for all access.

They charge to delete an account?
Isn't that like blackmail?  Can just see the site admin "oh we can delete your account but it will cost you this much, if you don't pay it your wife/hubby/partner might find out at a later date that you are signed up to it".

what I find interesting is that it said there were about 36 email accounts with .govt.nz as the signed up address

Did they verify the email address at all? I've seen a list of addresses for the .cnn.com domain such as a@ me06@ etc, so I am not sure that the .govt.nz addresses are actually legit...

LOL @ people asking for the file.
Are we all having an "oh crap" moment?

Saw somewhere this morning it was dumped on the TOR network.

there is a couple of problems.

Notice this in the story

A lawsuit "See Ashley Madison fake profile lawsuit; 90-95 per cent of actual users are male."
Sounds like there are a lot of fake woman profiles made by the owners of the site.

And
But as Wired notes, Ashley Madison's sign-up process does not require verification of an email address to set up an account.
So anyone could put in Johns email address without john knowing
