It's unfortunate, was really hoping for a change, I guess it's time to sign our selves up to be a state of Australia. :D

But the Australians have the Union Jack on their flag too ...  undecided

Bet that they now vote to change it so it doesn't look like the NZ one..

LOL, no they think NZ is pretty much a state anyway.  However, if they become a republic they might change it.

The Canadian flag was imposed on people who didn't want it.  While it stands out, that doesn't mean it's a good flag, or the right one.  If anything it's a symbol of how democracy was overruled.

In my opinion the Canadian flag is easily the best flag design in the world. Simple and very effective. It says "Canada".

Disclaimer: I am not Canadian.

Very much so. Now, the Union Jack doesn't say NZ, nor do 4 random red stars to the vast majority of the rest of the world.

Going by the article I quoted, if they had a referendum I gather it would have failed, due to beach towel and political influence, yet the Govt of the day made what is now seen as a 100% supported flag, which as you say is all Canada as the rest of the world sees it.

bizarre that the typically anti-colonial left wing politicians there turned this into an anti John Key thing and encouraged their constituents to vote the opposite of what they would normally vote.

Angry Andy should just keep doing what he is doing and the continual path to them not being the main opposition party will continue.

Their latest brain fart of even considering to support the idea of a universal basic income for ever NZ citizen = a top tax rate of 82%. Try selling that policy.

The rejection of a new flag is, to my mind, an indication of the essential immaturity of the electorate. Prior to the vote, it was enlightening to read the rage, the anger and the negativity on social media, most of it driven by the anti-Key faction in the community, as well as the "lefties". Anyway, democracy rules, and life moves on, albeit chained to an old flag that symbolizes our old colonial past.

I'd be ok with a flag change if they had a design I liked.
Canada has the best flag. :)

Yeah I was trying to get at the fact that the flags look almost the same, so we might as well be one country. :)

Apparently our flag came before the Aussies'.

Or, maybe, simply, that the majority of the electorate didn't like the proposed replacement.

This thread has gone downhill since the results. frown I read the lastest posts looking for some reasonable analysis and found too many less than constructive comments: too much petulance, scapegoating and fuzzy thinking.

I will be interested to see a comprehensive analysis of voting. Post-vote surveys could be indicative of why people voted the way they did. The problem is that if this is highly politicised, as many believe, then many people will respond with whatever serves their political objective rather than telling us why they actually voted the way they did.

That was why I voted for the current flag.

Here's an idea. When we next want to change the flag (or become a republic & dump the honors system). Lets get some designers and advertising folks that actually know about flag design and iconography. Yes there were 3 of the 12 that had a modicum of related interest to design (Nicky Bell, Malcolm Mulholland & Hana O’Regan - as we really need to respect the treaty here!).

Then after they come up with some good ideas and present a number of really different designs. Then online voting to whittle it down to 3 or 4 different options.

The the next general election have the 3-4 options available plus the current flag.

Then whoever wins is the flag of choice.

Or do it like they did in Canada.. Just get designers to design something and make a unilateral decision this is the new flag as no one will possibly agree.

Wonder how the vote would have gone if the flag had been the white fern on a black or blue background??
