ok, I'm all for NZ being involved in an international treaty but then there need to be international law, which there is not. so how can we have a international treaty without international law ?

This is a stupid display of power by america to protect (lets face it - overpaid) hollywood actors and account execs from the loss of a few dollars. Like I said $500 million sounds like a lot but hollywood would lose that when it rained on set

Just because you watched a movie, does that mean you would have paid to watch it ?

The media reaction stinks of FOX CNN prehype

You don't understand the process  around Treaties, Interpol cooperation. The US laws don't apply here as ours don't apply in the US, what we agree to do is cooperate with law enforcement activities and detain upon request and extradite to stand trial. These treaties have been enacted and authorised by International Law.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

KiwiNZ:
It's called "International treaties" being a good global citizen and cooperating with other states to fight crime.

Honestly if you cannot see how terribly terribly wrong it is for armed NZ police to be raiding anyones house over alleged copyright infringement in a foreign country, you should move to America and get a job at the TSA or DHS.

Have you read the indictment ?

If it were only for file sharing there maybe some small, very small justification for concern. I am glad that scum like that will be removed from NZ.

Money laundering. Unlawful possession of firearms. Seems like a pretty good excuse to use armed police.

You should move to America and see what a basic traffic stop entails, then you might think yourself lucky that 99.9% of interactions with police in this country involve no firearms.

The scumbag is not even a Kiwi - He was a criminal before he even came and lived in NZ, hence is has no business here in NZ and hopefully he is extradited out of here.

Zip works by taking note of numbers of adjacent characters and substituting them with a formula that says how many there were so that they can be put back in. Thus nothing is lost. The zipped file is not the same as the original. If it was a JPG, it is not viewable in an image reader in its zipped form. You have to unzip it (i.e. use the formula to insert characters back into the file)

JPG compression is different. It removes data but doesn't  tell you how to put it back in. Once it's  gone, it's gone. The file size is decreased, but so is the quality. The upside is that you can view it without having to unzip it, but it won't be as clear as the original.

I think you should read the indictment before commenting further.

1080p: With the correct compression equipment you would not need to stream anywhere near 40GB worth of data for a true Blu-ray experience.

Many 'pirate' Blu-ray files are transparent to source and only 9-12GB in size. I am almost certain that some commercial grade compression hardware would be able to achieve a similar service with even smaller files.

In fact it could even be a premium option to increase the bitrate of your feed for those people who really want as many bits as possible.

That doesn't make much sense, because why wouldn't they use that compression on Blu-ray in the first place? Either it's new technology (possible, I've no idea) or there is something missing. Is MP3 "transparent to source" vs CD? Some would say so.

To human ears, MP3 is indistinguishable to CD audio, all other things being equal. Video encoding is a very different beast but it is possible to compress video further than the DVD/Blu-ray specification without losing any perceivable quality.

If they've got the space to store the higher bitrate on the same medium, why wouldn't they? There's no point pressing blu-ray discs with 10GB of video when the same discs could just as easily store 50GB of higher-quality video. To do so would just be selling your product short.

Careful there... you can encode MP3 at 8kbit/s and on any normal track, that's not going to sound anything like the CD did.

However, once you get beyond ~192kbit/s, the differences are harder (if not impossible) to hear.
