Rikkitic: You should discuss this with the bot if you want to carry it further.

Or with your cat, either will be an equally productive use of your time.

Definitely more productive than listening to your rants about ChatGPT!

Sigh. Who knew such a simple account of a joyful event could cause such a ruckus on GZ. I’ve never heard of the Birthday Paradox. My story is between two people and their two kids and I don’t think it counts the same as random matching of birthdays in a large crowd.

Mine was more of a warm fuzzy story which also coincided with Winter Solstice and a full moon, so you can throw those into the mix of Wow and I bet the likelihood percentage will drop even lower. Shall I add that the grandparents and father were doctors and that the placenta was in a heart shape, as reported by them. I think Chat GPT might explode now.

FWIW I find chatGPT incredibly useful for writing code snippets. I ask it in hopelessly vague terms to do what I want, and it gives quite useful answers. As I am constantly bouncing between different languages I find it impossible to remember all the semantics of each, but I know the algorithm or function I want and it usually gives me a good result along with an explanation.

There seems to be some negativity about it here, not sure why. Perhaps some people and outlets have overblown its capabilities and significance, but that's not the product itself's fault is it?

Generative AI seems to be at its best when used as a supplement to human creativity, rather than as a replacement for it.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. I'm a big fan. It does the grunt work of searching multiple sites and producing a distilled result. Not every question has to be answered with academic rigour and not every answer has to be swallowed whole. It is a tool, that is all, but an incredibly useful one. It is also really good at languages. Much better than those Nigerian princes.

In the specific case of code, ChatGPT is notorious for providing apparently OK but also buggy, incorrect, and insecure code in response to queries, a side-effect of it being trained on buggy, insecure, and incorrect code from StackOverflow.  So there's a reason for people being quite cynical about it.

The fact that this is legal to buy in NZ:

The sole reason this thing exists is that anyone with access to basic tools can convert it into an unlicensed handgun... and you can just walk into your local Gun City and buy it.

Yip & that's why you have to ask it to write secure code, not just code.

Sure, but why is it still around now?  We restrict a whole bunch of things when they're subject to flagrant abuse, why not these?

my point was more that its only a problem today. so is it a firearm problem or a people problem? illegally modifying firearms has always been a problem so why the hysteria now? probably something to do with govt changing the firearms laws and police/media doing their typical crap stirring and scare mongering to wind the public up so they can play politics some more.

this is nothing to do with gun safety, its all to do with politics.

What did we expect from a social media network that takes down breastfeeding photos while leaving posts inciting hatred up?
