The Kiwi version of "The front fell off"
"The front fell off" is already Kiwi enough.

But in this case it was "beached as bro"
I just received an email out of the blue from an outfit that bills itself as 'compliance nz'. It has my details from my power provider and announces that it is going to upgrade my meter in a month. I have a very old power board and meter in an old farmhouse. I previously had a conflict with my provider regarding meter readers but I thought that was resolved.
Question: Can they do this? Do I have any rights about it? Can a meter upgrade be imposed on me? I have always resisted this for what I feel are valid reasons and I strongly suspect they are trying to force this on me because they want to save money on the meter readers. Do I have any rights here? If I refuse the upgrade can they refuse service? What is the law here?

There are some things that they cant do, like just cut you off with no warning but really it is absurd the amount of stuff that retailers have to put up with from customers who object to metering equipment changes.
If I had my way the visit would result in either the new meter installed or the pole fuse pulled with a job logged to drop the cable to the house in a week if it wasn't sorted by then.

If I had my way companies would be slapped with huge fines every time they treated their customers with arrogance and disrespect.

From this story:
ACC is proposing to cut more than 300 roles as part of cost saving measures. It is proposing a reduction of 390 roles, of which 81 are vacant, in areas that sit outside the client-facing teams. This equates to a proposed 9 percent reduction of its total workforce.
"We're also proposing to invest in 65 new roles that support the delivery of our services to New Zealanders, and our board has also endorsed a plan to reinvest some of the proposed savings in approximately 250 additional client-facing roles
That text is a bit ambiguous but it seems like 390 - 81 = 309 before, 250 + 65 = 315 after. So after their massive cuts they'll actually be employing more people than before the cuts.
Wasn't this the plot of the Yes Minister episode "The Economy Drive"?

Why wouldn't you want an updated metering device? Something that would allow you to have always actual readings instead of "imaginary" numbers every second month?

Am I required to have a smart meter?
It's not a legal requirement to have a smart meter in New Zealand. You can find out if you have a smart meter, by using Your meter.
Some power companies require you to have a smart meter to be on certain power plans.
If you don't have a smart meter and would like one, contact your power company to see if you can get one installed and if there is a cost involved.
Retailers are required to ensure that there is an accurate meter in your home. Your retailer may therefore need to replace or recertify the meters at your property to ensure they are still fit for purpose. Your retailer may require access to your meters from time to time to carry out this work.

What's wrong with imaginary numbers? I always pay my bills on time.
I am old and stubborn. I like some things the way they have always been done. I used to have enjoyable gossip sessions over tea with the meter reader when she came by. I don't see why everything always has to be new and improved and rush rush rush.
Consumer NZ says only the power companies are benefitting from smart meters because they save on meter readers but the benefit doesn't get passed on to customers. Why should I subsidise them?
I have concerns about my old and crumbling power board. Things work fine at the moment. If the meter installer stuffs something up I have to pay for the new board. No thanks.

This is the proper solution to the months of meter reading issues you reported. Don't complain, it's a good thing.

And yet you're back with an obviously related query a short time later.
