timmmay: Seagate are meant to be the worst for reliability. They are cheapest though. I've had a good run but I think it's ending.

I have had 2 seagates fail within the last few months. Both were over 2 years old though. But prior to that , I don't think I have had any real fail prior to replacing with larger ones. They have reduced the warranty on them to, to just 2 years, when they used to be 5, so that may tell you something. But it is a dying technology with SSDs.

I actually got the Seagates NAS models and I am told (actually repeatedly) that these drives have a five year warranty.

Perhaps it is mainly the consumer ones where the warranties have reduced. The 2TB one I just purchased a few days ago has a 2 year one, but I guess the consumer ones are a lot cheaper.

Not very good first experience - Amazon uses a shoddy service called iParcel (or i-parcel) . Item is stuck in customs for 2 weeks now in the US. Bought a SSD approx $130 as a test run.

Can't say I'd use this free shipping service and will revert back to freight forwarding.

All the orders I get from Amazon are delivered by i-parcel. Never had bad experience with them and received updates throughout the delivery. Perhaps contact Amazon and ask them what's the problem?

Amazon has one of the best customer services all around.

my current hdd i ordered says flagged by US customs and its been a week. I emailed i-parcel and they replied with this

"Hello,
Thank you for contacting i-parcel. I show that we have been pre-alerted  from the vendor that this shipment will be coming to our facility. At this time we have not received this shipment at our facility from the vendor to export this parcel. Once we receive the shipment from the vendor we will begin the export process of your order.
Regards"

Contact Amazon. You have to deal with them, not the transport.

The free shipping is slow, with limited information available. The package of socks that was send on the 8th Jan is due to arrive 28th Jan, though I see it arrived in NZ on the 19th Jan. I wonder why it takes 9 days to get from there to here.

Though I knew the time it took and wasn't in a rush, so it's fine.

contacted i-parcel again since the status is still the same and they responded with the same email "the item has not arrived with them yet"

so i contacted amazon and they said dont worry, it will arrive by the date they said (10th feb) otherwise they will just refund me...they dont seem to care until its pass the due date

Well if you have a due date then that is the plan.

timmmay: Is there any way to browse amazon with "show me only AmazonGlobal eligible items" turned on? That'd be much easier than hunting around.

I went via "International Shipping" http://www.amazon.com/International-Shipping-Direct/b?node=230659011 and then on the left side you can select "AmazonGlobal Eligible"

It doesn't seem to work very well, as products that it filters using this enabled, may still get charged for shipping. They really need an easier way to do it,

When searching choose product category, then choose amazonglobal eligible, then choose amazon.com as seller to find product listed by amazon that will ship here free (excluding bulky/overweight items).

Thanks. I think the trick is to make sure that those always remain ticked, because for some reason I switch category and do a search with the filter, and it unticks the amazon.com as a seller, and then lists all product sellers.

I found it harder to take advantage of than you'd think, even with the AmazonGlobalEligible and Amazon seller boxes ticked (and they would also constantly come unticked for me too). I had an order of mostly small stuff (e.g. t-shirts) that seemed to be all eligible, but every time I reached the checkout, I was still being charged shipping. In the end, it turned out a couple of the items (all t-shirts) weren't eligible for some reason. Removing those from the cart dropped the delivery fee. But it took quite a lot of trial and error to get there. If you look at the shipping page, it seemed to me that everything has to be grouped into one shipment. If you get a screen showing separate shipments, you may still get socked with a delivery fee (at least I did).

Of course, much easier with one item over the $125.

And I've never had a problem with i-parcel, either.

In my experience (recently - within the last 2 weeks) the i-Parcel tracking can be very slow to update. I had something showing as still with NZ Customs when it was delivered to my desk here at work.
