Edit; it is not racism, anyone can apply for compliance with certain traffic offences.

Nope, you're completely wrong.

This is the police policy (not reworded).....

"all Maori drivers caught without a licence or in breach of their conditions are to be referred for training and not given a ticket"

In what way is this not racism?

My Step Daughter "looks" nothing like a Maori but she was classed as Maori (as her Grandfather was part Maori) when she applied for a scholarship (and she got it).

What is the legal definition of a "Maori". This is one of the problems I saw on the TV the other night that the Police had trouble working out who was a Maori.

the "Maori Community Development Act 1962" defines a maori as "Maori means a person of the Maori race of New Zealand; and includes any descendant of such a person" and this is even what the NZ Stats department use as their definition.

How many of them attend the training?  If they don't attend the training, they then get a $400 fine.  How many pay the fine?  Probably none..

Reality check people. My understanding from the One News item last night is that they are not "let off" they are given a set amount of time to go and get a licence. If in that time they have not become compliant they will be issued the fine.

Personally I don't have a problem with this and recall a cop doing the exact same for me many years ago regarding an unwarranted car and I'm in no way Maori.

I think we're kinda missing the point here if we're worrying about who is and who is not Maori.

This is a simple problem looking for a simple solution.

If you 'claim' to be Maori then you get reffered.  Let the agency then just reject you for not being Maori, so you just get the fine plus an additional administration fee for wasting peoples time and telling a lie.  Or let's just give the agency some cash to train the other people who show up.

At the end of the day this is just about getting people trained up properly isn't it?

Is this really a race debate?

I'm not saying I agree with this policy, because I don't, but you should probably look up the definition of racism because this is not "racism"

Yes, it is racism according to the definition. . .

"discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race"

White people are being discriminated against.

Nope, it's about getting maori trained up.

White people can pay a fine.

Reality check, when it is policy to apply this lenience based on race as the criteria, it is definitively a racist policy. If this policy was reversed, and it was "white drivers on the north shore" instead of "maori drivers in south auckland" there would be protests and marches and riots all over the place of how racist it is.

Why on EARTH would you sell this policy this way?

Just make it for everyone - no issue at all.

Making ANY policy decision with race as a determining factor is guaranteed to cause a media nightmare.

If Rachel Dolezal lived in South Auckland, would she get a ticket?

Actually I think you mean 'non maori'.

There are any number of other untrained low income enthnic people in south auckland I suspect.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Perhaps the media nightmare is exactly what the South Auckland Police wanted.

I don't see a problem at all with the approach.  It's clearly got attention.

Good heavens...  I don't even know whether to respond because this whole argument feels like the baby brother of Godwin's law or something.

I consider this racism as it only applies to Maori not "White" people.  If they want this then it should apply to ALL people regardless of colour or religion etc.
Just imagine the uproar if this policy was the other way around..
