There is absolutely no chance they would block a brexit. There would be huge civil unrest and the government would fall.

They wouldn't want to do themselves out of a job.

Government should never in full conscience give the people what the people want its scares them and confuses them. It is better to give them what the did not think they wanted this there is surprises not disappointments.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Especially not after Brexit has done them out of the nice sinecures they thought they'd be enjoying post-Westminster!

My nephew is studying politics at Manchester University. His view on Westminster? Nothing more than grounding and a stepping stone to the real EU political rewards and gravy train. At least he is honest <sigh>.

If the result of the referendum was that the majority were in favour of a withdrawal from Europe the Government could in view of some of the doubts being expressed, may propose that  after careful consideration, the considered view of the Government was that, while they considered that the proposal met with broad approval in principle, that some of the principles were sufficiently fundamental in principle, and some of the considerations so complex and finely balanced in practice that in principle it was proposed that the sensible and prudent practice would be to submit the proposal for more detailed consideration, laying stress on the essential continuity of the new proposal with existing principles, the principle of the principal arguments which the proposal proposes and propounds for their approval. In principle to give Brexit a thorough and rigorous examination of all the proposals, allied to a detailed feasibility study and budget analysis before producing a consultative document for consideration by all interested bodies and seeking comments and recommendations to be included in a brief for a series of working parties who will produce individual studies which will provide the background for a more wide-ranging document considering whether or not the proposal should be taken forward to the next stage.

In short, they will block it.

Yep. Couldn't resist. It's still relevant many years later.

Yes Minister is more relevant than ever. Unfortunately, most people today do not realise it is supposed to be a comedy.

When ‘Yes, Minister’  was broadcast every week, the business of the nation came to a standstill while MPs crowded into the many bars at the House of Commons to watch it.

Referring to ‘Yes, Minister’, The Prime Minister Mrs. Thatcher was quoted, "Its closely observed portrayal of what goes on in the corridors of power has given me hours of pure joy."

MikeB4: Alea jacta est

They need Trump to rid them of damned latinos who can't speak the Queen's english.

Polls close in 10 minutes (9:00am NZST).

Anecdotal reports suggest a very high turnout, despite the weather.

If it were only Spanish and not Latin (The die is set).

But then again, I dont think Trump would know the difference between Spanish and Klingon.

yep with the vote done the die is cast. Instead of crossing the Rubicon, Britain may well be crossing the channel one last time.

Doesn't matter - he'd send them all back to Tatooine regardless.
