I was at a squash court on the shore last night, there was a crazy number of them crawling out of little spaces everywhere in the court and surrounding courts. It was very weird! Not to mention distracting.
Depending on the people you co-habit with, it could be one of these: https://www.thinkgeek.com/product/kmnr/ :-)
What eats crickets, he said hopefully...
Deep fry them ... and you can eat them :-)

Yeeesss. I have. In Cambodia. And spiders. To borrow from the wise words of the immortal Mick Dundee:
"You can live on it, but it tastes like sh*t!"

Fred99:
Could be katydids - if it's a high-pitched repetitive chirp.
I found some on youtube, but they seem to be a foreign variety with a different accent - they don't sound quite the same as kiwi ones.
No, it's more continuous than one of those.
It sounds like whatever it is is up on the roof.

Have you accidentally locked your wife out of the house, is it possible she has lost her voice? :)
I seem to recall that when I were a kid dad used to put out Malathion/barley cricket bait at the start of summer.
I like the sound of crickets and cicadas.

Me too. To a point. We were camping a few months ago. They were out in force and it was almost deafening. Kept my kids awake till around 11pm. Made for a pretty average day 2.
A few years ago I had a regular screeching sounds at night, was driving me crazy. I was worried that it was electrical.
Went outside on one particular noisy night and I found a bunch of snails on the window panes.
Their shells were scraping on the glass like fingernails on chalkboards... I cut back the plants close to the house and problem gone

Ha. No. I suggested it was the spirit of the dog. Being an Hungarian Vizsla, he used to squeak quite musically and vocally when he wanted something, so I said maybe his spirit passed through the kitchen ceiling and stopped in a convenient insect, just to have a final jape.
It looks like rain all week so perhaps that will shut up whatever it is!

Smoke alarm battery going flat ?
Some crickets decided to move into my garage recently... what a noise.
Luckily the sound is dying out... :-)

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.
