In the last week or so, we've had a very loud nocturnal screechy chirpy noise just outside somewhere.

It's a higher pitch than a Cicada and only happens at night.

Being less familiar with the fauna than others may be, I have no idea what it is (apart from annoying!) So wondered if anyone else had a suggestion what it might be.

Yes could be crickets although it sounds higher than the videos. Might just be closer, as I think they or it are on the roof.

What eats crickets, he said hopefully...

Could be katydids - if it's a high-pitched repetitive chirp.

I found some on youtube, but they seem to be a foreign variety with a different accent - they don't sound quite the same as kiwi ones.

Maybe; I'm not even sure what one of those is, though - never mind what noise it makes. I'll go and Google it!

Grass grub beetle, either ours or Tasmanian, usually heard Jan-March, most commonly at night.

Have you got long grass outside?
I find crickets seem to like the long grass, after it gets cut very short they relocate further away.

If you get one inside the house it can really drive you nuts trying to track it down to whatever crevice, nook or cranny it has found to hide in.

and you can never quite pinpoint where it is, the sound seems to come from everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
