The media is reporting that one of the injured in a NZ hospital has died, bringing the total to 19 deaths.

There are still about nine in critical condition.

I think that technically it’s 17 with the two missing not yet officially counted as deaths - but realistically you’re correct.

Geonet have reinstated all the Webcams on White Island, not overly clear as it looks like no one has landed on the island to clean them but can see last night images which shows the Crater is still really hot

The two people missing after the Whakaari/White Island eruption have been confirmed dead by the Chief Coroner.

That means at this stage 20 are officially dead.

Stuff is reporting yet another death in an Auckland hospital, bring the death toll to 21. I don't know how many more people are still in critical condition.

Seeing this headline today made me think of the White Island eruption.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/mount-ruapehu-ski-season-visitors-told-to-avoid-volcanic-hazard-zones/4FTMDFAORSD524G2DIABBACGS4/

Can't help thinking that White Island was at level 2 on the day of the eruption and Worksafe want to prosecute a whole bunch of people including some who weren't anywhere near White Island when it erupted.

Seems to me there's a bit of a disconnect. Either level 2 is safe or it isn't.

Sure there's a 2 km hazard zone but that won't be be much of a barrier in the case of a lahar, plus I'd be willing to bet some people will venture inside the zone "at their own risk" which is more or less the conditions for the White Island visitors.

So in reality we have a situation not that much different to before White Island erupted.

Are Worksafe using the White Island event to further their own agenda or is level 2 really unsafe? If level 2 is unsafe why are people being allowed onto Mt Ruapehu?

IMO its a lot like most things these days. If it erupted its a fail, you didnt protect us. If it didnt erupt its a fail as we could have gone up there safely. Maybe Im pessimistic, but thats the world today. Negative, everything is a problem, blame goes here.

Maybe its just a safety net? So no one gets blamed?
