I watched Close Encounters when it came out in 1977. It was amazing -the effects, the story, the conspiracy to hide something in plain sight.

A lot of that still lives today in the back of some people's minds but for an almost teenager that looked incredible. I bought the DVD back in the late 90s and watched it recently on Amazon again. Of course is a lot different from our world now but the basics is still there - it is a good story.

I can still remember as a teenager at the theatre being absolutely spellbound at the early scene with Richard Dreyfus in his truck at the train crossing - the film had me in it's clutches from that point and it remains a sentimental favourite to this day.

Re-watched it with a 16-year old recently, and it hasn't aged well for teenagers brought up on modern CGI. Her view = meh.

But I still loved it!

I guess that what's I was curious about. There are plenty of films I like that have iffy VFX by modern standards; so is it just that I never saw it when it was "current", and therefore have no attachment to it? Will my 4-year old have a similar reaction to Star Wars when I show it to her, or do some films have greater longevity? Is it a question of "story" as well as FX? I've seen plenty of films where the storytelling is as old-fashioned as the VFX, and it can be just as detrimental...

First Man.
Centred mainly on Neil Armstrong's family life, relatively slow paced, could have told the story just as effectively in less than 2 hours 20 minutes. The film makes very little effort to introduce people and to get the most out of the film you need to have a reasonable grasp of the American space program.
It was well acted and audio was good but don't expect a movie along the lines of The Right Stuff or Apollo 11.

Viewing was spoiled a little by the theatre we watched in. Westgate (Auckland) cinema 3 has a large blemish about a third of the way up the screen, right in the centre. Once it's seen, it's really hard to un-see. Compounding that there was so much ambient light from the exit signs, etc in the theatre that the black expanse of Space was a washed out dark grey. I'd like to know what resolution the movie was shot in and what it was projected at in this instance. I want to watch this movie again at some stage, but it will be on my OLED and hopefully in Dolby Vision.

Edit: 6.5 is probably a bit harsh and coloured by the theatre experience. Perhaps more 7.5.

Dingbatt: First Man.
cinema 3 has a large blemish about a third of the way up the screen, right in the centre.

That is absolutely unacceptable for a cinema. That'd completely do my head in that I'd have left during the trailers and gone somewhere else after getting a refund. Have done that before a couple of times.

Man From Earth - very much an "intellectual" movie, not action etc but gets you thinking. 8/10

Venom - Enjoyable brainless romp :) Dont go for the script or story, just leave brain at the door and enjoy. 7/10 - NZherald reporter claims its 2.5hrs long - dunno what they were watching but even the studios say its only 1hr 52m.

Reprisal (2018)

Pretty bad.. Some not great acting, and a plot with holes so big you could drive a bus through them. If you just want some mindless action, this could be a contender in the $1 bargain bin, but I definitely wouldn't pay good money to see it.

The pace of movies has increased significantly now too, so it's not necessarily just the visuals.

Big action movies today are lacking a decent story, and move so quickly you're not left worried about the size of the destruction etc.

What's another building knocked over? rather than being emotionally invested in the building occupants.

reminds me of this analysis

Missing the emotional involvement/tension, despite the last ones attempt to go with more real rubber models.

SmallFoot. Took my 6 and 9 year olds. Quite a number of laugh out loud moments in it. Not a bad movie, 7/10

Kids both LOVED it.

The First Man - 9/10.

Seeing the trailer my first thought - that's nothing like Neil Armstrong. Looks like a good space movie anyway. It is that and more.

The movie follows the chronology of Armstrong's involvement in the space programme and gives some impressions of the technical and human endurance challenges. It is unique in that it attempts to give an impression of the interior lives of Neil Armstrong and Janet Armstrong during this time. To that extent it's an emotional ride all the way through, even though the actors express very little emotion. I have not seen anything like it.

There is a lot of shaky camera work all the way through. It's not extreme but I did think several times I wish they did it in 100hz. Seeing the trailer again at home it looks better. Now I blame the equipment. Next time I see it will be at a better theatre.

I did not notice the 2 hours and 18 minutes passing.
