Someone calling me 5 times today from an unknown number when work had been so crazy that I couldn't answer and not leaving a message. Important enough to try and get hold of me 5 times but not important enough to leave me with a way to return the call. Guess it will just turn out to be someone selling something.

Its just spam. If its important they would SMS or email you. I have true caller rejecting anon calls straight away and one day it did over 20 rejections of them, and about 6 from BS +44 numbers. Really wish the 4g network providers would provide naked 4g service so I didnt have that stupid billing identifier that let people interrupt me.

I wish network providers would allow me to reject all calls with a withheld number.

15 years go in the US I saw a service where they caller had to push a number and reveal their number before it would ring or go to voicemail.

I've been quite impressed with Samsung's implementation of a system that attempts to ID calls and screen them as spam where applicable. It works reasonably well and I wasn't aware of it until I crossed to the Dark Side from iPhones, which don't (or at least did not when I last had one at the 6 iteration) do that at all.

Actually that reminds me, someone I know has no number show from their work phone because of 'privacy' reasons some braindead old age manager made up years back. They also do not leave messages because of 'privacy' or send texts/emails because 'privacy' - I asked how they ever got hold of anyone under 40 and they basically said that they didnt and those customers went elsewhere. Way to ruin your business.

Right up there with ASB implementing a requirement for me to provide ID in order to pay ANY amount of cash into my account "to protect you and your accounts".

I asked them from what they felt that rule would protect me, but no one knew...

Change banks. If the restrictions continue... The government is on to you.

I've seen multiple iPhones recently where after the iOS update, their phone has magically set to withhold their caller ID. It just a bug, and these user are not savvy.

Tempting - especially when I see the bank charges every month combined with the "We sponsor the All Blacks" adverts...!

From the wording of the notice about it, I presume it is something that has been imposed on them but what I detest most is the lie that it is to protect me (or any other customer) when in fact it is to make the government's life easier or the SFO's life easier.

Private number has tried me 6 times again today and finally I answered. Es an automated message claiming to be from ASB and asking me to enter my date of birth to verify my ID before continuing. Hadn't heard of this before so I hung up as didn't want to risk handing over my ID when I couldn't verify the call was genuine. Is this likely to be a scam?

You did the right thing, and it was almost certainly a scam.

If you're unsure, contact ASB via a known good link... their ASB.co.nz website, phone number from whitepages.co.nz, or whatever. Obviously? don't trust any links or email address or whatever in a message that you're dubious about.

In fact, never hand over any information about yourself to someone you don't know, or that you don't trust.

That also applies to Facebook, including those pages that ask you to choose "your Xmas carol" or "your hip-hop DJ name" or "your favourite cocktail" or whatever based on your birthday and/or month and/or mother's maiden name.

First noticed at airports, but now other places.

There's a lovely view of the planes (or insert view) and a nearby seat.

So you sit down and the frame of the giant windows is now at eye line blocking out the lovely view.

Currently at seaside, walked along prominard and watched the surfers. Noticed a seat, lovely, I sit and watch the surfers.

Nope the hand rail of prominard is now at eye level blocking view completely..

Paging @asbbank since if this is them doing it, then its as absurd as when the clowns at gem visa tried calling me and asking for personal information to verify my identity.

They're claiming it is some new anti-money laundering requirement.

But it's not - the recent change only applies to cash deposits over $10k.

The well known ** Hi Fi who just supplied a product I ordered in Space Grey (for Apple) in Silver...

Of course, when Amazon take all their business because they can actually manage simple tasks like supplying the correct order, it will be the fault of "foreign companies not paying their fair share"....
