(i'm not sure that without China and India doing most of the work that it will achieve much), you are actually facilitating the exploitation of the poor who mines your rare metals for batteries; and (now this is just a guess this one i am probably just making up) poor farmers exploited by middlemen traders (search avocado wars for example), refusing to eat un-happy meat trading it for unhappy humans who slave to produce whatever you want to buy. i'm not saying one is necessarily less bad than the other, but these things come to us at the cost of some poor kid or family.

Actually, per capita it is the wealthy countries that emit the most greenhouse gases. And the wealthy within those countries. Basically it's down to consuming more.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_greenhouse_gas_emissions_per_capita, NZ is 22nd on the list, China is 50th, and India is a *long* way down, below the world average.

Linuxluver: Getting there.

The Tesla Model 3 was delivered 3 weeks ago.

We've ordered an MG ZS EV (280km real range) as our 2nd car.

But today our solar + Tesla powerwalls went live. Awesome.

If it's not too cheeky to ask what did the solar & powerwall setup sting you? I suspect it's too much for me but I'd love to go that way. I have an older leaf (2013) and a bit of solar power weems like the next step. Probably I'll go for a smaller grid tied system with no battery just due to the economics of it all.

Picking up my E-bike tomorrow morning.
Will replace my petrol car for the work commute.

Really looking forward to riding it. It makes the Dunedin hills super easy!

Already own an Leaf so the second (petrol) car is only used for the short work commute and Saturday morning kids sports - invariably the kids had two games on at the same time in opposite directions.
The new ebike should bring my petrol powered driving down to under 500 KM per year.
(Winter sports and a conditioning drive for the engine once a month outside winter sport season). Looking forward to going back to one car in 5 years :)

My main concern is the price to buy these battery powered vehicles.
Not everyone can afford even a 24KW Leaf. $15,000 for a car is way to much for most of people.
And paying $20,000+ for a Leaf with a high SoH is not impossible.
Lets not start on any other brand of electric car either - the price just climbs rapidly.

And as for Ebikes - I really wanted something that could handle the hills with ease, with a good battery size for range.
I think I got a cheap ebike that does that well, but that cheap ebike was still $2900!
Most decent e-bikes seem to cost $3500-$4,000 and more.

My point is that we are worse than China and India, so it's incumbent on us to change. We can't expect them to "do most of the work" if we aren't prepared to do our bit.

The climate doesn't care about per capita; the only number that matters is the amount of GHG being emitted. I'm not saying we shouldn't do our bit, to show willing - but we need to be realistic about its impact. We're pissing into a very strong wind if India and China don't clean up their act.

Pragmatically, if the big countries aren't going to do something major, we're better off concentrating on a healthy economy so we can afford mitigation

Americans remain shaky on the details of climate science even as they have grown increasingly concerned about human activity warming the Earth, according to a national poll by The Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) that probed the public’s understanding of climate change.

The rising alarm is one of the poll’s most dramatic findings. In just five years, the percentage of people calling climate change a “crisis” jumped from 23 percent to 38 percent.

More than 3 in 4 U.S. adults and teenagers alike agree that humans are influencing the climate. The overwhelming majority of them said it’s not too late for society to come up with solutions, but a third of adults who say humans are causing climate change don’t think they can personally make a difference, the poll found.

...More than a third of American adults, 37 percent, cited “the sun getting hotter” as a major contributor, and 21 percent called it a minor contributor.

Nearly 6 in 10 adults correctly said that driving cars and trucks is a “major” contributor ... In fact, the transportation sector ranks at the top of the major sources of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, largely because of cars and trucks, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Twenty-four percent of American adults said airplane travel is a major contributor to climate change, while 44 percent said it’s a minor contributor. The EPA finds that aircraft contribute about 3 percent of U.S. carbon emissions.

The poll finds that 33 percent of adults think that raising cows for food and milk makes no contribution to climate change, and only 21 percent said cows are a major contributor. The latter is accurate: A recent report from the United Nations said livestock (including poultry) accounts for 14.5 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, the bulk of that from enteric fermentation — the digestive process that leads cows to belch methane.

The global wave of school strikes for the climate over the past year has “achieved nothing” because greenhouse gas emissions have continued to rise, Greta Thunberg has told activists at UN climate talks in Madrid.

Thousands of young people were expected to gather at the UN climate conference and in the streets of the Spanish capital on Friday to protest against the lack of progress in tackling the climate emergency, as officials from more than 190 countries wrangled over the niceties of wording in documents related to the Paris accord.

In the four years since the landmark agreement was signed, greenhouse gas emissions have risen by 4% and the talks this year are not expected to produce new commitments on carbon from the world’s biggest emitters.

Thunberg, whose solo protest in Sweden in 2018 has since snowballed into a global movement, spoke at a press conference before a march through the centre of Madrid. She said that although schoolchildren had been striking around the world, this “has not translated into action” from governments.

“I’m just an activist and we need more activists,” she said. “Some people are afraid to change – they try so desperately to silence us.”

I had not realised that was what the Nobel was for. It must have been dumbed down. Like so much else...

I looked at building my own ebike and even then your are looking at $2000 or so. Min $350, more likely $500 for a decent base bike and around $1500 for a motor and buttery etc from Luna cycle. Then put I have to put it together.

You can go cheaper but I wanted some guarantee of quality and the bike not to be totally gutlesss.

Maybe they will come down in price over time but looking at bike costs generally I'm not holding my breath. The small NZ market I suspect.

Anyway been riding my bike for almost a well and an enjoying it so far. Want to get a decent ride under my belt soon, preferably with a nice coffee break in the middle :)

Bafang on eBay has a good reputation. It's strongly recommended you don't use the supplied chain ring, and buy a third party one called Lekkie bling ring

Note the watts these put out are way beyond legal in New Zealand, 300 watts, so don't use them on the street ;)

My bike is 500w and it's legal. I wished I could put another 500w down as it's not enough on the hills.
