You are willing to eschew your personal liberties at the expense of the rest of the nation and hand over your right to choose what you view to the government. What gives you the right to enforce your morals on everyone else? If you want to become a slave then more fool you.

Note: I am not condoning porn or the viewing of porn, however I am very strongly opposed to censorship.

They didn't have much of a problem with people slacking off at work.

If you're unintentionally "stumbling upon" porn every day, you may want to either check your PC for malware, or revise your browsing habits... but let's not derail the thread too far down the path of popups and browser security ;)

Well out of a million possible categories I could choose to "opt in" or "opt out". Porn would probably be the single biggest category I would be quiet happy to have automatically blocked.

At the end of the day I think it would be a good idea to have this responsibility handed over to ISP's.

Haha this is entirely too true. I have no idea how people 'stumble' onto porn. I have Google Safe-search on and never run into porn unintentionally.

Either it's done badly, and it doesn't work well (easy to work around, misses lots of stuff, slow, etc) or it will become one of the most expensive capabilities ISPs have to build and maintain. Not only that, but it will impact on Internet use in ways you just can't comprehend.

To be perfect, places like youtube would need to be blocked. Same with Vimeo, same with dailymotion, same with Facebook etc. Any site with user generated content will be at high risk. Filtering these would be prohibitively expensive.

So you have a choice between a bad solution that doesn't actually block much (and blocks a lot of stuff it shouldn't) and an impossibly expensive solution that will result in vast swathes of the internet being blocked.

If you go for option 1, you're still going to have to do the policing yourself, and option 2 is never going to fly.

This is about making people feel better that they are doing something, ANYTHING, rather than a solution that actually works.

Yea, thats what I normally do.
Works pretty well especially if I have my daughter sitting right next to me.

We sometimes on the computer together. It has actually happened, and the Microsoft filtering does not always work

Yea, thats what I normally do.
Works pretty well especially if I have my daughter sitting right next to me.

don't use Bing. Google safe search does a much better job of filtering porn than any ISP is likely to be able to implement.

So then. Is it possible for me to put a system in place, at home, which will take care of all of this?

IE. Filter out porn?

It does not have to be 100% accurate. I can select somewhere "porn on" or "porn off"? Maybe on my router?

I'd like it on my childs mobile devices as a choice, though I doubt I'd be willing to pay for that service.

I think my willingness to pay is also an issue here.

I suspect that providers would give more services if people were willing to pay, but we're just not.

Just paying for access to what I want is expensive enough, paying for the provider to deny me access... ya.

We do this kind of monitoring at work. I can request from our IT department any of my employees PC activity. And this includes websites visited, time spent on the internet etc ...

At home I'm using Microsoft Family safety. It works pretty well.

We already allow this sort of monitoring/blocking in the workplace.
