jeffnz: I was talking to some old staunch right wingers today and a couple were talking about National maybe doing some deal with Winston being PM for half of the next term with Key getting out. I nearly fell off my chair and spilt my latte

Surely not? I feel sick thinking about it. Makes no sense really, as they would want someone in National leadership to take National to the next election and Winston certainly wouldn't qualify

Interestingly. As I understand it, 61 Seats gives National enough to lead alone, they have 62 right now with 62% of the vote counted. Oh how nice it would be to have no coalition partners.

How come 3 parties with 1% or less (so far) get seats but another with 4.6% doesn't?

I think I would be happiest to see Hone Harawira gone, I'd take that in place of National leading alone I think. That guy is just the worst.

I'm not a fan of his and the way he carry's on but feel sorry for him that he was lead astray by the Internet party, I don't know what he was thinking as he goes against most of what he stands for.

Looks like it is slipping away from him as the majority is growing

I agree. Hone represents a certain constituency and if you look at his underlying policies they are about feeding kids and providing opportunities. He represents an electorate with a huge amount of poverty and massive problems. I don't like the way that he goes about it but I'm not exactly in his target demographic.

The Internet party on the other hand can go to hell where they belong.

There are ways he could have helped his electorate way more than he has. He has put himself offside with a large part of NZ that he could have used the support of. I don't think he was led astray, I think he went willingly thinking it would save him, but sadly two wrongs don't make a political party.

All this in spite of Dirty Politics. Imagine what the margins might have been otherwise.

I am half expecting the usual suspects to pop up with claims of election rigging and other tin foil type comments.

yes you are right he does a great job for his people he represents, I can't help thinking that Harre and McCarten were factors in Hone going with the Internet party but it backfired .

Labour might have to face the facts they will have to find some actual policies for next election rather than just opposing for the sake of it.

This was a savage beating by anyones stretch of the imagination. Is it the lowest result in recent history?
