I would be happy to see the state permanently disabling some high risk criminals by severing the spinal column

Are you ethically against capital punishment? It seems to me that surgically paralyzing someone is arguably worse.

Aly Franco, where Smith may be imprisoned, is a notoriously harsh place. In 2011, the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture recommended its immediate closure. Seven inmates had died at the prison in one year and overcrowded cells were in a state not fit for humans to live in, the report said. "Cells in Ary Franco were generally dark, filthy, stuffy and infested with cockroaches and other insects. "The heavy overcrowding and poor maintenance of the cells resulted in conditions that created serious health problems for the inmates, such as mycosis and other skin and stomach diseases. "In some cells, the SPT could see that the sewage system from cells on the above floors was seeping through the ceiling and walls." Inmates were often locked in these cells, without proper ventilation or natural light, continuously for up to two or three weeks and had to take turns sleeping on mattresses or cold concrete floors, it said. The SPT observed a "highly repressive" general atmosphere, characterised by the continuous degrading treatment of inmates. It also received consistent allegations from inmates of ill-treatment and beatings. Brazil's justice minister, Jose Eduardo Cardozo, said in 2012 that he would prefer death to serving a long sentence in one of his country's prisons.

Stress: I can't help but laugh that he's going to spend a year or more in a Brazilian prison. Those places are NASTY! If he does make it out alive maybe we should drop him in the middle of a favela? He wouldn't make it to the exit alive. Oh karma, you rock!

Where are you reading he might be there for a year or more?

Yes but why should we the taxpayers fund his stay?

He cannot be rehabilitated so it is like keeping a rabid animal - a waste of money.

If find it ironic that this crim has gone to such lengths only to make his situation infinitely worse than it was. If he had stuck to his rehab schedule he could have been out in a few years or months. Instead, he is probably curled up in the foetal position rocking, and blubbering right now; begging to go back to a NZ prison.

Personally, I think the NZ Govt should take its time getting him repatriated. I'm sure the Brazilian authorities will be happy to continue with his current accommodation for a small monthly fee.

Cheaper than flying him back to NZ and much more instructive for him.

Apparently he did "significant research" in order to come to Brazil as his best option. Why didn't he pick Mexico or something, haha. That's what they do in the movies!

21brandon21: They need to introduce the death penalty and harsher crimes for these cockroaches. We need to implement the Thai System for prisons. Prisons should be a hellhole not a holiday in. They get better treatment than people in rest homes.

P.S. If you get caught stealing you should get your hand chopped off imo. (3 chances to be fair)

LOL, man oh man.

Do you think the people who commit these crimes give a toss about the consequences? It's the same with the whole antismacking debacle. The people who beat their kids within an inch of their lives aren't thinking of the consequences, so therefore the law which was originally intended to stop those people has little or no affect.
