Here we have more evidence that the much vaunted all-seeing-eye internet surveillance (remember, via Snowden we know GCHQ are taking direct feeds off the transatlantic fibres) doesn't work. Apparently MI5 didn't know because Facebook didn't tell them. If dragnet surveillance worked, Facebook wouldn't have to.

I can imagine the headlines "SIS stops terror attack following monitoring of Facebook, Opposition groups call for inquiry and curbs on agency's, this breech of democracy"

we need to cooperate with the guys if they are to be expected to share those resources with us. Therefore our local units need adequate resources and powers.

I've always wondered what might happen if I made several fake Facebook accounts, associated them with terrorist groups and perhaps did a little bit of "role play" with them.

Probably nothing, but it would be an interesting experiment.

Personally I would merge all three services into a single force based on the US Coast Guard model and restrict operations to NZ waters and territories. Defence of NZ, fisheries protection, anti drugs action and SAR responsibilities.

There's little point in participating in any other overseas actions when you only have 3000 personnel in toto.

We will never have a strong enough military to defend ourselves against all potential aggressors. It can also be argued that as a wealthy, free country it is our moral duty to contribute to global peacekeeping, anti-terrorism and prevention of human rights abuses - I'm not at all religious but the good Samaritan is an analogy. Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq..the US with all its might still hasn't won any wars fully.

NZ population will not just let an armed force come onto our land and take it.....this is where licensed firearms owners would end up being our army, taking it to the bush and the streets.

I don't think you can really compare weekend warriors with bolt-action hunting rifles who generally contend with nothing worse than a terrifying lack of bacon for breakfast to a bunch of people who made guerrilla warfare into their national sport 3000 years ago.

Wasn't Tame Iti and his mob of merry men getting ready for such an incursion til the killjoys at AOS et al put a big damp squib over it all ?

You'd be able to hide out in the Urewera's etc quite well, mounting guerilla attacks on unwelcome armed migrants.

He's a great example of why such laws are not necessary. The police are perfectly well aware of him already. If they have reason to believe he's a serious threat and not just a nutter, then they shouldn't have any difficulty getting a warrant to surveil him, should they?

This. If he was trying to forment insurrection in secret he should make more of an effort to stay out of the news.

What danger do NZers going to fight for ISIS pose to NZ, anyway? I understand current legislation would allow us to arrest them when they got home, so fail to see the need for urgency.
