Can I assume that because you are so concerned about the planet that you ensure that no toxins are released into the environment by your pyromania? And that you capture and sequester any CO2. And that you use any energy released by the combustion rather than let it be absorbed by the atmosphere?

Living in the countryside isn’t an excuse. As multiple people point out, it doesn’t matter where you are or how small your individual contribution is.

You are just stirring, as you do. My points are valid ones. Try addressing those instead of shooting the messenger.

Yeah right.

I just bought a new washing machine with all those fancy lights.

When you turn it on, it weighs the load and decides whether it is running a full or partial load and adjusts the water and energy use to match.

I am not aware of that feature being offered on any mechanically governed machine.

Now, I could do that manually and indeed I used to do so but I would expect that the vast majority of users would not do so.

Those owners will see significant reductions in water and power charges. Probably enough to pay for the machine over 5 years.

Oh, what an enormous effort to actually have to look in the machine to see how full it is and adjust the water level. And the energy! Imagine having to actually choose between cold, warm and hot! Oh, the humanity!

Apart from that, I very much doubt any flashing LED machine is going to pay for itself in five years through reductions in water and power charges, but I'm happy to be corrected with actual statistics. Don't forget to include all those repairs for chip failures!

Other than the terrible F&P toploaders, I haven't seen any electronics failures on machines, its always something to do with the pump or else rust that kills them. The old top load that was clockwork that a flatmate had here for a while had 3 failures. 2 of which resulted in a flood. One was the sensor for how full it was when filling, and the other was its excessive vibrations that it didnt stop to deal with caused a hose to come off.

A top loader will save a lot of water on each wash if it only goes to half way, thats half the water that needs heating, half the water used for the rinse, and if it can spin it faster when spinning that is less water going to the dryer to deal with.

[rant]

I remember futurists telling us that we wouldn't need washing machines by now - as we'd all be wearing disposable machine made clothes made of cheap synthetic fibres.  Naturists probably had a better solution for the environment.  Now we use cheap foreign labour to make clothes that can make us look our finest, on a budget, wear them a couple of times, then biff them in a charity bin to make us feel better about ourselves.

Sometimes the guys in marketing and distribution really don't understand the product, but know it has to look its best...
