Jaxson:

I'm more amused around the 13 regeneration limit rule bending, than the fact that this incarnation is a female.

Like in Bond, a shake up to a female bond could be amusing too.  Anything to bring some fun back into the franchise, rather than watching Daniel Craig suffer through weak scripts with the same grumpy look on his face throughout.

Funnily enough, although I think a female Doctor is a great idea, I'm not so much a fan of the idea of a female James Bond. Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying 'girls could never be 00's'. I'm simply saying that James Bond is not a woman. But a Bond movie where he has to work hand in glove, so to speak, with a female 00 is an intriguing idea. Too bad they didn't do it before Judi Dench bowed out.

I don't think it is gooing to be good for the ratings longer term, due to who the Main audience is and relatability. But maybe their stats show differently. . A pity they didn't use a more mature woman, say in the late 40s , 50s, as I think that would be more beneficial for young female viewers to see. This is because it is common knowledge that once an actress reaches a certain age, many find it difficult to get leading acting roles. This is less of a problem for male actors as they age.

TwoSeven:
Paul1977:

Geektastic:I saw an interesting comment on a UK site re this particular casting where someone wondered how a female doctor would get on if the story was set in a time when a woman's opinion was about equal to that of a horse and whether the BBC would completely re-write medieval history to accommodate their casting choice!

I made a similar comment earlier in this thread, but stating I believe this can open up new story opportunities and challenges the character has never faced before - and so if done right is a very good thing. But also that the writers will have to strike a careful balance between overdoing it and ignoring it completely.

I think you may have a very poor view of history if you think women in the middle ages didnt hold power or have any rights

I might suggest you take the time to learn about Eleanor of Aquitane, Empress Matilda, Aud ketilsdatter (one of the founders of iceland).

Apart from being rich enough to buy the province of Aquitane, she was also good at Math and as I understand helped formalise the english language.

In northman life, woman had authority to run the house and farm. In Ireland a lot of society was matriarchal not suprising since the celts prior to that believed in equal rights.

@TwoSeven I'll admit that I don't have an in depth knowledge of history, and it sounds as if you do. But how plausible would it be for a strange woman to show up from nowhere and be allowed to take charge of a situation with very little push-back in, for example, late 19th and early 20th century England (a staple of the Doctor Who revival seasons)?

I don't think anyone is arguing that throughout all of history women have had no rights at all. But certainly in MANY historical settings women did have fewer rights and less authority than men (certainly if the woman is a stranger with no title etc).

Some of my historical knowledge may be lacking, but I hope you have read my others posts and realise I am not arguing against a woman Doctor, I think this is a good choice all around. I just believe there are most certainly certainly challenges she will face based on the fact that she is a woman that she never faced as a man - one of them being to get men to listen to her in certain historical settings.

EDIT: expanded example historical settings, and added additional comment at the end.

Probably no more unusual than a strange man with a long scarf and funny looking hat taking charge of a situation.

Victorian England you would be quite safe sending a nun, armed only with a ruler.

Jokes aside, if you think about it you will find that Dr Who is not respected on looks at all. Dr Who is respected for very different qualities.

Yeah, nah... I disagree 100%.

I'm not a young female viewer (or any kind of female viewer), but I would have thought teenage or twenty-something women will relate better with a 35 year old Jodie Whittaker than they would a woman in her late 40s or 50s. Many female actors in their mid-to-late 30s wouldn't be able to convey the appropriate level of maturity and experience that is needed from a 1000+ (?) year old Time Lord, but I think Jodie Whittaker can.

And then, right or wrong, there are all the (shall we say) "aesthetic" reasons why Jodie Whittaker will retain larger male audience than a much older woman would.

That's a fair point but, as I mentioned earlier, I think it has (at least in recent memory) been far too easy for the male Doctor to take charge in any given situation as well. He gets respect from all the new characters in an episode without having earned it.

The Doctors psychic paper that he uses to easily fool people into letting him take charge of any situation in just about every episode is one of the laziest cheats I have ever seen in a TV show. I hope that, under the new show-runner, this is removed from the show entirely (either just quietly forgotten, or explicitly destroyed/lost in the first episode of the season).
