ArcticSilver:

There is a difference, the cyclists are in their own lane and the road rules apply as if you are crossing a lane. Hence drivers should check that lane before they turn. Motorcyclists are not allowed in this lane.

Again, cyclists have their own lane, motorcyclists do not.

What do you mean "have their own lane?"

Only in about 5% of the Wellington CBD do they have their "own" lane.  The rest of the time, they are on the left hand side of the road.

Cyclists, Taxis, motorcyclists, and scooters are allowed to share the bus lanes in most areas down here. But apart from that, there is only one small cycle lane.

If you think that cyclists somehow own every single non-marked 1m of the left hand side of each road in this country, then I think you might be wrong?

I won't reply to the rest of the comments, because the post was a bit too long to read at work, I just skimmed it for my name, and replied to that part :)

It does come to mind that cars are allowed to filter on the left too and in some places the road is widened slightly to help them to do so Laughing Wink.

What city are we talking about that has cycle lanes everywhere!?

The Wellington council gave cyclists their own half of a 5M wide footpath through Kaiwharawhara in Wellington, they still insist on riding on the road.

freitasm: Motorcycles? Talk about cyclists riding side by side going up hill and blocking traffic behind them, and I will agree even more.

+1

I am out on the west coast of Auckland, 3 a breast going along Scenic drive, leaves me shaking my head.

ArcticSilver:
Stan: I dont know why so many people care its hardly your life they are playing with if they ride like a bat out of hell.
Few years back when I was on 2 wheels I hardly cared what other road users thought of me lane splitting over taking 10 cars at a time, all I had in mind was a destination and wanted to have as much fun as possible getting there I took relatively low risks never pushed beyond what I considered I could handel, used the bike everyday and did not crash ever.

I miss riding..

This is exactly the attitude I hate.

Your wrong, it IS our lives that you/they are playing around with when riding like a bad out of hell. You could easily seriously injure some one, if not kill them. The faster you go the more likely you are to kill them as well, even if they are in a car!

Before you read my post, most of it is tongue in cheek and not meant to offend (although I do realise that some of it will read as being condescending - and on purpose).

I personally don't give two hoots what you or anyone else thinks of my riding coz I ride a motorbike baby!!!  Yes, my attitude sucks!

I ride within the confines of the law, I don't draw attention to myself for the most part - with the exception of lane splitting, filtering and overtaking on a no passing line!  yeah - ima bad boy!  rebel without a cause!

Hang on...... back the truck up!!! What's that?  Overtake on a no passing line?

What, you didn't know that?
You are also legally allowed to overtake on the no passing line as long as you remain wholly to the left of the yellow line.
Obviously it would be stupid to do so going 100 miles an hour, on a bind corner, while eating an ice cream, and playing the violin, but there you have it.

http://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/2004/0427/latest/DLM303051.html
"The driver must not pass or attempt to pass a motor vehicle or an animal-drawn vehicle moving in the same direction within the length of roadway on which the no-passing line is marked until the driver reaches the further end of the no-passing line, unless throughout the passing movement the driver keeps the vehicle wholly to the left of the no-passing line."

So next time you are stopped in a traffic jam and those dastardly motorcycle/s pass you on a no passing line (legally, and safely), don't just assume that it's against the law and you know better.  There are all sorts of rules that we don't know from day to day, and we all can't be experts.
And for gods sake don't pull over all of a sudden to the right to block their progress - you'll cause an accident and you'll be at fault.  A lot of guys are running helmet cams these days for this exact reason - Evidence!

FYI: Just to save the inevitable comment, In the 22 years that I've ridden a motorcycle, I've never overtaken on a yellow line using the above rule.  I've never been in the situation that I've felt it safe to do so.  Which brings me to the point of my post, just because it's legal, it doesn't mean that we are all going to do it - no matter our attitude!

I do agree that some of these riders lane splitting probably do so a little fast for my liking though.  I've had a few cringe moments while observing them.  Maybe I'm just getting old!

Ignorance is that attitude that I dislike.  But I respect your opinion! ;)

Actually networkn, recent studies shows that lane splitting is a life saver.

I'm a motorcycle rider myself, and to be honest, I don't opt for lane splitting unless the weather is bad and I need to get home.
