Hi There!

I consider myself a pretty considerate driver, and I try as best I can to make allowances for other vehicles on the roads, including Motorcycles, but just recently I find myself increasingly irritable at the dangerous way I see Motorcycle riders behaving on the roads. I am not sure how much of it is legal, but regardless it seems to be dangerous.

Examples would be riders riding up the middle between two lanes of cars often for extended periods of time, or driving BESIDE cars in their lane which seems suicidal to me. Recently I was approaching the Kaimai's and there were 8 riders behind me. They obviously wanted past, so I pulled to the side despite the fact I was doing the legal speed limit to allow them PLENTY of room to find they blow past me, and then on double yellow lines, pass the car in front of me and then RIDE the yellow lines to pass the car in front again, despite oncoming traffic!

The problem I have is that an accident could easily happen, it was wet, it's narrow and if they get into an accident, the impact of that isn't just on them, but everyone involved.

I have a friend who was involved (Not responsible in any way) in a fatal accident, he just isn't the same as he used to be.

Scooters are almost as bad, some of the things I see daily is terrifying.

I actually know a couple of riders, and perhaps they aren't typical, but they are so arrogant about the road and other drivers. They obviously complain bitterly about the treatment they get on the roads, but I certainly don't see as much of that as I do of rider stupidity.

Motorcycles? Talk about cyclists riding side by side going up hill and blocking traffic behind them, and I will agree even more.

freitasm: Yes I agree.

I had an argument about a similar thing with a motorcyclist who was fairly radical in his opinions, but he was basically.. "it's all car drivers fault". I said to him, that with respect, car vs motorbike, motorbike will never ever win, and it's a side effect of driving a smaller vehicle you need to be more aware and make additional compromises. He wasn't very happy about it, I got abused, to which I asked him if being right was worth dying over. He shut up after that.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a rider hater, I just worry about the horrific mess that occurs when riders ride like they own the road.

I ride a scooter, and the rudeness of those riding motorcycles and driving cars astounds me.

It appears that common courtesy is an after thought on the road, and often the aggressive behaviour is not even productive.

Please stop.

Yes motorcycles are bad on the roads I drive, it is so common though that I don't even notice how dangerous it is any more.

Scooters though I have never had a problem with, they seem to be much more sensible and always pull in when they are limited to 50 km/h.

I agree, some blike riders are bad. I have a nice new car, but I commute to work on a motorbike. I'm on 2 wheels so I need to drive safe. I thus ride in the lane like a car. Riders going up the line between lanes is risky in moving traffic. Even at a stop light, they will no doubt clip the odd wing mirror. Be considerate

If the lights are red and will stay red, I will go up the inside to the head of the queue. Allows me to get away sooner, frees up one space in the lane, I keep away from the cars. Simple manners

I'll preface by saying I'm a car driver first and foremost, I bicycle to work each day and have ridden motorbikes in the past.

I find that there are idiot cyclists, motorcyclists and car drivers in equal amounts. Most motorcyclists I know and observe tend to be defensive riders and don't do the things you mention but there are still the odd few I see riding like that.
I would go so far as to say many motorcyclists are more cautious on the road than most car drivers as the possibility of injury from a mistake is far greater.

There are certainly plenty of idiots in each form of transportation that give that form a bad name. (Cyclists on the Port Hills in Christchurch ride like lunatics and aggressively cycle in front of cars, Spandex death wish riders I consider them.)

Some car drivers in Christchurch are just plain inattentive, this morning cycling to work I had to slam on the brakes on my bike to avoid becoming a pancake on the side of a young truck driver who decided to pull out of a driveway without looking at the road(disc brakes are awesome.) at all, I wouldn't go a week without seeing a handful of near misses happening on my 4 k bike ride to work and back.

Can't agree more. It's true for majority of the 2-wheeler drivers. And unfortunately this trend is fast spreading.. seeing the 2-wheelers fly through packed motorways probably encourages more car drivers to transform into such ninjas! Frown

Although at present, these are very less in numbers as compared to 4 wheelers, but I can imagine where we are heading into!

I have seen the worst of it, back on Asian roads where 2 wheel vehicles fly all over you, scratching your mirros, door sides and what not!

Cn we have more of people like:

How about some law changes like no riding between the lanes or over the lines for 2 -wheel vehicles (if  presently not in road code for them) and Police initiating drives to catch offenders just like they catch over speeders on long weekends while reducing speed infringement tolerances?
Surely, steps need to be taken before its too late..!

I do not think this is true for Auckland. I have only ever seen 1 motorcycle rider, riding like a car in a proper track on a motorway. I commute through 16 and 1 daily for work, morning and evening, always seen ALL bikers zipping past through the tiny gaps in between cars! Cry

I think the risky behaviour of scooter / motorcycles and push bikes depends on the location. From my perspective they are a lot more aggressive and undertake risky manoeuvres in the Wellington areas than I have seen them do in Auckland. (mind you pedestrains are worse).

The cyclists on the Western Hutt motorway get me.  Where they cut acrosss the Dowse on and off ramps and want vehicles to give way to them at motorway speeds. Seen a few shaky fists there.

Mind you at least motorcycles and scooter riders pay ACC levies to cover their risky commute decisions unlike push bike riders.

I find european car drivers to be extremely terrible, especially audi and bmw drivers /s :)

I agree with the above statements from a few, saying they all seem to come in equal amounts. Cars, motorcyclists, bicycles, and scooters all seem to have good, and bad drivers.

In the CBD/Wellington, I'd have to say people crossing without looking seem to be more hazardous than other cars/motorbikes. Buses, and Taxis are another hazard within the CBD too!

Its the same old thing, we see a couple doing soemthing we don't like and we go trivbal and launch into gross over generalising.

I see an equal of bad car driver v cyclistsv pedestrians doing stupid things. I'm thinking maybe when they checnge to a car driver, cyclist etc that they still do stupid things.

As for cyclists riding side by side, read the rode code they are entitled to by law unless passing. Just remember how wide most lanes are so if you can't get past 2 cyclists as its not safe then most likely you can't get through with one only. A lot squeeze through and sub consciously don't register the cyclists as a threat but wouldn't if it was two cars.
Suffice that the time most have to wait is measured in seconds not minutes and hours so if you are waiting try and put yourself in the others shoes.
