Elpie: 12:30am and another group has started. These have been going on and off around the neighbourhood since just before 7:30pm, before it was even dark. I'm not fazed by the noise because I am still up doing things but I feel very sorry for the people trying to sleep.

Yet they don't legislate xmas parties which make much more noise in a much more sustained manner.

Actually be damned, all fun should be banned from here on in, as it's sure to inconvenience someone.

Well they don't help in the event of a party every day for 6 days at xmas that starts at 7pm as my kids go to bed.

If I am in any way inconvenienced, I demand the govt ban them outright.

It was a celebration of the fact that Parliament and the King survived a plot to kill them. This set off a few hundred years of sectarian violence that still resonates today in the UK. The "guy" that was burned was, until recent times, an effigy of the Pope. The idea of burning Catholics lost its appeal over time and society moved on to burning effigies of Guy Fawkes or other unpopular political figures. Margaret Thatcher's likeness was burned one year.

End of history lesson.

Fireworks shouldn't be banned, simple as that, as a kid my dad taught me the ins and outs of playing with fire. As a teenager i learnt the consequence of being stupid with them. As an adult im sensible and learnt from my mistakes. I will pass what my dad and teenage hood taught me to my children

If you live in a city and think fireworks is your biggest problem to sleep with you have a sleeping problem, as a kid i have been able to sleep through them with ease and all my cousins (by the many) were able to sleep through them. If anything what would wake me up at night is that clown movie i sneakily watched.

S@!t happens, accidents happen, its life. We live with the prospect of injury and death everyday so lighting a small cracker isn't going to change that fact

Having just bought a heavily discounted small box of fireworks for my kids, I'd have to say that no - fireworks should not be banned.

That's because the Gunpowder Plot was part of a religious inspired terrorist conspiracy. Most academic research identifies Fawkes and his co-conspirators as terrorists.

terrorism ˈtɛrərɪzəm/ noun noun: terrorism

the unofficial or unauthorized use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. "the fight against terrorism"

Call me crazy, but planning to blow up Parliament sounds like a pretty violent political statement to me.

We have considerably less instances of thunder and lightning in our neighbourhood per year than fireworks but ymmv. Lightning has never hit our roof either in the 9 years we've lived there. We've definitely had more than 9 skyrockets land either on our house or in our section during that time however.

Which is pretty much irrelevant to this discussion. A fireworks ban won't help stop skyrockets from landing on your roof because they are already banned - have been for years.

Until tonight I had mixed thoughts about banning fireworks, but over the last two hours I've watched with concern an idiot who lives in the next street to me deliberately aiming his "star-bursts" at an angle of approx 30% so that bursts would literally shower the roofs of a group of townhouses next to me.

It's often sad that the bad spoil things for the good, and this is definitely a case of an irresponsible idiot here in Christchurch wanting to spoil things for responsible firework users.

Just had my six year old have great fun watching a little garden display, and staying up late to watch all the others outside the window.

Sure, this kind of anti-social behaviour needs banning forthwith.

Had a good time with fireworks tonight. Lots of crazy dangerous stuff which got lots of laughs from all around after dodging fireworks shooting at them! Good times.

11:40PM and still multiple houses around letting those things off. It was raining a bit after 10 so thought maybe they might shut up, but the rain moved on :(

So far reading this thread I have noticed a few people mentioning using fireworks to blow things up, that is why I think people want them banned.
