You have to ask, if they can stop someone form travelling who has a fine to pay how can they let people like this get through.

Turns out it's a little more difficult for New Zealand to get him back in to the country after all.

What looked like it was going to be an arrest and back in the country within 72 hours has been a week now with no news on whether or not he will be coming back.

I wonder which government will give up first?

*Sigh* Generally you and I are on opposing sides of the political debate. But this time ... Although I would never advocate letting NZ prisons end up that way, this time I agree. He did 'careful research' to choose Brazil. Let him rot there.

The thing that amuses me about this is that the outrage over him being able to fly died down. It should have gotten worse.

Why did the initial reports state that he should be deported? Because it was assumed that he didn't use legal travel papers. He didn't break any laws fleeing, other than the fleeing itself.

The government doesn't block people currently in prison from traveling. But have a $5 fine outstanding and they can block you from flying. The disconnect is that they generally try to cancel travel papers issued to people currently in prison. But that's policy, not law, so there's nothing to keep someone with valid travel papers from using them while serving a prison term.

The outrage over this massive gap should have increased when it was learned that he couldn't be deported, and instead must face the longer extradition process. The reason he can't be deported is that he traveled legally (as in had all the right papers to leave NZ and enter Brazil, not that he was allowed to under the conditions of his leave). But even the government, who started the false rumours that he'd be deported didn't consider that he'd have valid travel papers and be able to walk right on to a flight.

The government doesn't know what's legal or possible under the law.

It should take no time to pass a law against this, to make it so he would have been deportable. I'm highly confused why nobody is discussing the reason why he's being extradited (slow, expensive), rather than deported (fast, cheap). Instead, the discussion here and elsewhere is about how it's poetic justice that he picked Brazil after researching it, and still ended up in a place where he'll be deported and gets to be in worse conditions than he'd likely face in NZ.

But almost nobody seems to care that he wasn't the first, and it's still currently legal for someone in prison or on parole to flee the country, other than violations of the terms of their release.

Smith owed $45,000 to Inland Revenue - unpaid tax from his fraudulent business conducted under his birth name whilst in prison - the same name as the one on his passport.

And they didn't bother to block him from flying because he was in prison. Then let him out of prison. And nobody saw the problem with that

Aaaand now I see he got $26700 for student living costs from Ministry of Social Development.

The govt need to offer him a job testing their departments as how easily people can get money from them. If he can do this from prison, there has to be massive fraud going on from people on the outside.

You seriously have to wonder how much of our money is wasted by government incompetence every year. At least our budgets are smaller and the amounts commensurately less than some other places - such as the UK.

One of the best was back about 15 years ago in the UK when Gordon Brown sold most of the UK gold reserves at $300/ounce when they then hit $1100 an ounce a few years later. Good call. Or the recent NHS IT system that was binned without going live, having cost the equivalent of NZ$30 BILLION by that point.

There really should be some form of criminal offence for incompetent use of public funds.
