There needs to be changes in health, education and attitudes. The later will take decades. Education in my very humble opinion needs fundamental changes. What is the point in teaching a young person who wants to be say a plumber french

higher Math or Geography at secondary school. Teach them about the skills he/she will need to do the job thus giving them a better chance to gain employment. However that is not going to stop them being violent etc, that is attitude changing and needs specialist help and education in order to break the cycles. Domestic violence, abuse, neglect or any violence is not a socio-economic problem it is a problem full top.

People change their minds on what they want to be at all stages of their life. Why limit what you teach someone based on what they say at 13? I wanted to be a police officer and a teacher but ended up in IT. Also, plumbers travel, and there is no reason that French couldn't be useful.

At school we had to take 1 term of foreign language and there were 3 choices. I think kids should be encouraged to learn all sorts of things.

By secondary school it is very clear if a young person is capable of learning and passing Math, Physics, French etc so the system should be able to offer alternatives that allows them to learn what they need to learn to do what they want

Instead of labeling them for life as failures and setting them down a certain path.

networkn: Well, I'd have to disagree on your take on reporting being unnecessary. it's how you determine if your teaching is effective (at a broader level). It tells the people who aren't teachers that things aren't working well and changes need to be made. Teaching isn't significantly different from any other role, information is power.

Sigh, you just have no idea about how the education system works in NZ.

Watch the Inside Education doco.

Then join the board of trustees of your local school. Work towards having a sister school that's a decile 1 school with your decile 10 school and work towards improving the achievement across both schools.

Then come back to me when you've done that rather than talking conjecture.

Throwing more money at education always has a positive outcome for the students and conversely cutting the funding which is what the government has just done tends to do the opposite.

Instead of wasting money on patrol boats we cannot use, Armoured vehicles we have not used, transport aircraft we don't need the funds could be invested in education. The Globe master currently under consideration tho replace the C130's cost $US200,000,000+ each. I am sure the average teacher could find far better uses for that money.

I have no problem with them being paid well for their public service. BUT

Why is it that they get a handsome pay rise every year and the public service doesn't.

I have no problem with them being paid well for their public service. BUT

That is not done by the politicians, its assessed independently by the higher salaries commission.

"My job has been to calm everybody so they don't pass judgment. We all feel for the loss of this young, precious life. "No amount of punishment ... is going to take away the grief."

I always find this odd. There is no verb "To farewell" in my dictionary - farewell is a noun.

That aside, I see the apologists are to the fore.

I have said before that I think the forces here would be better re-organised into something similar to either the US Coastguard or the US Marines - probably the former. Maintaining international military capability is really not necessary for us.
