I think people should just be better parents.
It's not up to ISPs, the government, teachers or anyone else but you to raise your children

Yea, thats what I normally do.

I am just waiting for health warnings on fast food and softdrink to come in. It is just so nanny state, and you don't want to follow the UK. Parents should be responsible for what their kids do on the interent and supervise them.

That reminds me of this one time at high school, we were all working at our desks and the teacher was surfing the net. She ended up at this gif of an [edit] animated [/edit] man sticking his rear end into the air and then proceeding to excrete feces which hence slid verily down his back, and straight into his mouth. Hilarious. She clicked off it pretty quick, a little embarrassed. Admittedly we were older than the children discussed in this thread.

Oh and geekzone: I get you might not like me using a colloquialism for feces lest it be deemed offensive, but you could give me the chance to edit my post instead of sending it into the æther.

The ISP I work for has been doing this for years and years as an add-on service whereby various levels of protection can be configured per user, with an override feature in case of false positives, or for those who need to stroke one out...

Sure its not 100% bullet proof, and doesn't stop internet usage via a mobile phone etc, however it stops accidental to moderate attempts to view whats being restricted.

And yes, its easy to implement for any skilled IP engineer with the right tools. Can't go into more detail without disclosing what product/appliances are being used to deliver said service.

Well the answer is right here, if you want porn blocked at the ISP level, move to an ISP that offers that service.

Its going to be a pain for ISPs to implement this, more than likely they will pass the cost onto the rest of us as well. So why should we have to pay for something we don't want (the filter)?

Anyway, shouldn't you be focusing on the real bad stuff on the net? Sure, go block porn if you dont want your child seeing sex, but thats not going to stop them going to LiveLeak or something and watch someone get their head cut off. Thats the stuff thats going to scar a child, not some blond bimbo with her tits bouncing in front of a camera.

Aaand you just admitted that said service requires additional product/appliance purchases on the ISP side. Who's paying for this... why should I as a customer who does not want to be filtered be expected to pay for this? In fact if my ISP were to implement an opt-in filter I'd drop them faster than a hot potato.

To those saying that this should be implemented:

I personally cannot fathom the thought processes of anyone who honestly believes it's acceptable for ISPs to act as moral arbiters of "wholesome, harmonious" content (there, I used the Chinese Government term for it just to rub it in a little) and require people to have to register to receive an unfiltered feed. I'm sure that system isn't open to any abuse at all! Why, the government would never request a copy of the opt-in list to find people they should be looking at in more detail.

I'm sure the GCSB will love you for it! Actually, maybe you already work for the GCSB and this is all a giant conspiracy? Hmmm...

Filtering something that is not illegal is the stupidest thing I've heard in a while.

I have two kids myself. I feel that I should guide them on what to see and do on the internet, yeah they might find something they don't like. But this is real life. I don't want them growing up in some silly bubble trying to hide the nasties, the nasty stuff exists in the real world.. .

Better parenting instead of helicopter parenting folks.

We got Sir David Attenborough's BBC series Africa on DVD from the store to watch with Bella. She's 7 and we watch one episode every day before bed. Last night the episode was about elephants meeting and how a bull was in "sexual heat" running like crazy, stomping, pushing trees, etc. Then it showed the elephant long erect penis hanging around while it looked for a female. The elephant then found a small female and mounted her. He stroke like crazy and let go when a bigger, older bull came close to start a fight.

Bella asked "what's 'sexual'". So now sex education starts. She already knows some animals have internal eggs (most mammals) and some lay eggs. Both need mum and dad. But that's it. Now we have to start talking about the next steps. Because it's all around us.

Should the state have decided for me not to have Sir David Atenborough's wonderful educational series about animals and life in general available to my kid because there's an animal sex scene in it?

Should I have not have described the sex act in this post?

Should I have not written 'penis" here? Why are Americans so crazy about mothers breastfeeding in public?

I don't want anyone else deciding this for me. Thank you very much. That's why the New Zealand censor stuck a "G" in that DVD. It means GUIDANCE. It means PARENTS do their job instead of expecting others to do it.
