I would consider it a travesty that this tradition I have been participating in since I was 7 years old, would be ruined by a few loud people worried about a disturbed sleep for a few nights a year.
JimmyC: My workmate relayed a story of watching their neighbour last night holding a roman candle in his hand and firing it off his porch whilst his 3 yr old son watched avidly. The son then asked to have a go so dad incredibly handed him the firework. The first thing the kid does is point it right at his own face to see when the next burst was coming... Dad was quick enough to knock the thing out of his hand but tears ensued as bursts went off all round the enclosed deck.networkn:

Have you even considered why some people complain? Your tradition isn't ruined by my being loud. It's ruined by the idiots who don't know how to use fireworks properly, and\or have no respect for other people or their property. Why should I just suck that up for the sake of tradition? Sadly there are plenty more muppets in our society today than ever, and they're breeding...

Handsomedan: Watching Campbell Live last night before going to a friends house to enjoy a fireworks display in the ir back garden with ou r assorted (and young) gaggle of children, I saw an interview with a guy that was selling fireworks.
He was saying that the allowable size and type has been reduced year on year on year and by comparison, an American firework that was 10 times the size was (theoretically) safer...why? People respect it. When it's the size of a house, you're not going to pick it up and shoot it out of your hand. You're going to light it and get the hell out of Dodge.
Unless you're the idiot that is going to give their 3 year old a Roman Candle to hold...because there's no cure for idiocy.

Ever heard of Darwins Law?
There are idiots on the road, they kill and injure more people on the road than ever get harmed in fireworks, shall we ban cars, and motorcycles too ? This despite people are required to be licensed to drive them.
Fireworks are safer than they have ever been due to increased safety regulations year after year and the type of fireworks are much tamer and get shaved down yearly.
Why should you suck it up? For the same reason I "suck it up" when it comes to other peoples traditions like "drinking" or "partying", because in a society, we attempt to be tolerant, to allow others enjoyment. It might be surprising to you to learn the whole world doesn't revolve around you.

Why do some insist on comparing fireworks with cars? Cars are a vital part of life for most people, fireworks are plainly not.
Parties and drinking come under numerous local and national policing methods from council noise control officers to police in riot gear. There are actions people can take if it gets out of control. Clearly the world doesn't revolve around me because I have zero control over people letting off fireworks whenever they choose. But since you clearly think I'm being selfish, who do you see as being more arrogant - the minority who annoy people with their fireworks when ever they choose, or the people who complain about it?
I loved fireworks as a kid and at the odd times I've used them since, but tolerance for others stupidity when there's no recourse can only go so far. I'd be happy if they could be restricted to specific days of the year and times of day\night, but I suspect policing that would be nigh on impossible.
If you knew as much as you like to think about the legislation surrounding making a nuisance of yourself, you would know there are about 20 different ways you can be punished for mis-using fireworks, including in it's most serious guises, being charged with Arson.

Again with making me out to be a know it all... Play the problem, not the person discussing it with you.
Within these approximately 20 different ways to punish nuisances, how then, in the middle of the night, am I to ascertain from which property fireworks are being let off? And then again, 20 minutes later from a different direction. And the next night at a different time from a different property. Like I said, nigh on impossible to police.
We're talking about people who save up all year and spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to provide them with a years supply for anything from parties to a bored Monday night. I must be blessed to have at least 3 such households like that within 80 meters of me.

networkn: I lit fireworks with my 5 year old in our backyard. It was the highlight of his recent memory I am quite sure. Last year we did this with him and my then 18 month old daughter (watching from a safe distance) and they both loved it, held sparklers and waved them around.
I would consider it a travesty that this tradition I have been participating in since I was 7 years old, would be ruined by a few loud people worried about a disturbed sleep for a few nights a year. The danger and risk to fire is significantly less than it was 20 years ago, they are LESS noisy and MORE safe than they have ever been before (In fact they are down right toothless now).
People need to understand that life is risk.

Never had people do that before. It seems people are far more inconsiderate towards others these days. They also seem to be far more noisey than they used to.

Hopefully in the next two years actually, been 7-8 years in the planning. The truly ironic thing is when I get there I'd love to be able to let off some fireworks from time to time :-)
