I can understand why these overseas companies would do this. The hassle of all the red tape would be a nightmare I think. I don't mind paying the GST at all, but I think the government need to think of a better way to do it, and I don't recall this being an election policy anyway.

I can imagine that freight forwarding companies  would also be required to charge it if people try to use their services.

Yup. I think the thing MOST annoying to people in this whole case is not the fact that they will have to pay GST. That's a small annoyance. The biggest issue in the Australian case is that it restricts people buying the items they want. It is only possible to source some blu rays (for instance) from Amazon in France, Germany, or the UK, but those will now not deliver to Australia, effectively preventing people from buying the goods they want. Where else are they supposed to go? The local stores don't have the goods, and it would be prohibitively expensive to get a local store to order goods in for you all the time. A blu-ray or CD would probably end up being twice the price.

This is effectively a geo-block, cutting people off from buying the goods they want. In the age of the global marketplace via the internet, this is a step backwards.

And it is all being done for selfish reasons, such as gathering tax.

Thats quite a biased rant. Should Oz citizens decide not to pay GST for local goods too? Given that gathering tax is selfish.

The rational explanation is that the tax should be gathered, as that funds the country. So, either Amazon collect it, or another means of collection is made

You criticise the Govt as its selfish tax gathering but you also criticise Amazon for geo blocking. So, you blame everyone.

The Govt isnt as they require GST to be collected for products consumed in Australia.

Amazon could collect that GST as they do in other countries.

The Govt could bring in a new means to collect the GST, but I doubt you would want to go to a place to get your $5 bangle and pay GST

The Govt has not geoblocked Amazon purchases.

IMHO Amazon doesnt want to level the playing field with local retail. They also should be concerned that EBay, Alibaba etc may get away with this issue and therefore Amazon is on the bad side of the level playing field with their online peers.

The easiest way to combat the latter is that the Govt brings in something that targets all imported purchases, and is relatively easy to collect the GST from the buyer. That solves the global issue, but how would they do that? If everyone was GST registered (not hard) and that all packages have the GST number on them (hard) then they can be billed semi automatically on arrival to a CC. The hardest part of that is getting the packaged to have the GST number as that comes back to the seller modifying their address label, which wont be standard globally.

It’s pretty simple - Amazon is choosing not to sell in Australia. There is no reason outside their control that they can’t sell there they just choose no to.

That's great news. It does put Amazon in a position of can do, but won't bother, which is a pity.

Imo Amazon intends to geoblock in AU simply to drive traffic to the AU distribution center. It's not that smart imo.

Very good point. A smaller, less variety store.

Not sure if this was raised in an earlier page,

Amazon as a U.S retailer will have the systems to cope with different sales tax models. as all but a couple of states, (Oregon) is one.

The level of state tax required to be collected varies by state and needs to be calculated at the point of sale.

THis is a response albeit a strong one to a political decision. rightly or wrongly its interesting to see some push and shoving at this level.

Page one with links ; ). Yeah agree USA is way more horribly complex with state + city + category calculations required. As pointed out earlier Amazon usa already calculates for NZ in many scenarios.

At the end of the day Amazon can choose who they sell to.

As I have said before they already sell to Australia via Amazon.com.au and this is failing due to lack of choice and high prices. It will do better once Amazon.com stops selling to Aus.

Amazons choice.

Yeh, It still sucks. If the same product was available at its Australian store, I would say all well and good, but it isn't.

Ultimately, it still prevents people from getting the goods they want. The global marketplace is suddenly less global and the whole reason this is goes back to the Govt charging tax on goods that aren't even sold in Australia - rather cheeky if you ask me.  The net result is a lot of pissed off people.

GST is a consumption tax. Its not a sales tax (goods sold in Australia) If goods are consumed in Australia they attract GST, so its not cheeky. IMHO you are letting your bias over missing out on some products as a Govt evil choice, its Amazons choice, and as stated, they can do what they wish to further their business. Thats their feeling.
