Geektastic:

Bladed weapons that go "ZZZZIIIINNNNNNGGGG!" when drawn....!

Don't even think of suggesting that this sound is not realistic! I have spent my whole life believing that this is the natural sound of a bladed weapon being removed from the air around it. I refuse to accept that my life was a lie.

elpenguino: Speaking of bikes, one of the things that annoys me about bikes and movies is the shot the movie has of the actor sitting on their bike,
Speaking of movies, everything ever to do with firearms. Infinity clips. Strobe-effect muzzle flash. Actors using ridiculous hand cannon that would embed themselves in their foreheads if they fired them like that. Infinity clips again. More infinity clips, and more dakka. Just.... everything.

To be fair, John Wick is pretty good at controlling the "infinity clips" and they have to constantly reload - or find other guns/clips.

While we are on the subject of Cinemasins (an excellent YT channel by the way)

Diving aircraft that always sound like Stukas

Sound travelling in the vacuum of space

Major abdominal wounds that are recovered from in days

Helicopters that can smash through buildings instead of crumpling against the outside

(I have to admit to watching Bad Boys for Life last night so some of the above came from that)

I wonder how many movies people would rate highly if they were forced to watch action films with 'real' sound. They might be stupid, but they give clear queues to people on what's happening.

I'm sure there are videos on Youtube that have re-edited scenes to include real sounds.

On a similar vein, a friend once pointed out how real fighter pilots would not get hysterical like they did in the dogfighting scenes in Top Gun.  Kind of ruined it for me now - every time I watch I just imagine the pilots calmly saying "Roger, Maverick, bogey on your tail at 6 o'clock.  Come round to 150 degrees to intercept." or whatever.  But he's probably right.

Must have strong nerves, I used to get the willies when one of the kids pointed a nerf gun at me.

Yep, people line up just to hear that stuff. 😀

Audio of Americans shooting down two Libyan MiGs -- not hysterical, but you can clearly hear the stress increase in the pilots' voices as the Libyans approach in a threatening manner.

"The Right Stuff" book talks about this... test pilots don't scream and yell as their plane tumbles out of control. Apparently it's a sequence of "I tried this. This happened. I tried that. That happened...".

I think that when you know your life depends on thinking clearly and responding correctly to a threat, there's a part of your brain that tells the rest of it to think clearly.

Probably Air Forces train their pilots to talk calmly, so that when they move on to airline jobs the passengers won't be frightened.

It would depend on your personality, the situation and 100 other factors. We all like to think we would react in way x in situation y, but often that's not the case.

Training would be a huge part of that, and the psycological screening so that people inclined to freeze or panic in high stress situations aren't put in charge of things that have a good chance of going wrong.

Neil Armstrong was the ultimate embodiment of this, both when he ejected at the last possible moment from the flying bedstead, and when he landed the Eagle. I have always been in absolute awe of that. He seemed like a normal human being in civilian life, but he was not one. He belonged to a very rare breed.

So does Aldrin. If I had been standing next to Armstrong at that moment, I don't think I could have resisted trying to grab the controls. The calmness of these people as they face The End is unnatural!
