Hi, I would like to ask; has anyone ever bought something from Amazon before? Cause I want to know what other fees you had to pay aside from shipping.

Depends on the price I guess, but I've never had to pay any tax/duties on anything I've bought and delivery is quick too.

If they ship to New Zealand then you will be responsible for GST. NZ Customs will ask you to pay the GST if the amount owed is over NZ$50.

GST is calculated over the price paid plus shipping costs.

You won't be responsible for duties in most cases though. Amazon pays those prior to shipping (yes, they charge it to you upfront) and refunds any overpayment, while eating any underpayment. Pretty good service really.

Check on the last page whether it says they've pre-calculated duty for you.

So, say if an item is $1,029.99 USD, will the grand total be somewhere above $1500 NZD, including customs costs?

Put it in your shopping cart and go through to the payment screen, that'll tell you. Just don't hit confirm order until you're ready.

I've bought plenty from Amazon with no problems, though nothing particularly large.

Most of the time you put it in your card and go most of the way to buying it till it tells you that you cant ship it to where you are. Ive basically given up on amazon as between that and the card address hassles with wanting things sent to one of our suppliers in the US and the address not being right im about 3 from 20 things I have tried to buy.

eBay is just so much easier.

Customs changed the amount to $60 to allow for the change in GST to 15%. The pre GST total then stays at $400.

eBay is just so much easier.

What's somewhat more annoying, to me, is when they send you emails saying "you may be interested in this based on your history", but, they email things that they know they won't ship to you. Same with specials, "buy this", so, you try and then they say they won't ship that to you...

I wouldn't buy anything that expensive from Amazon, If it's faulty, then returning it is a real pain in the butt.

If you look at the page and scroll down to the item description it will tell you if it's shipping to the US only, even before you put in the cart.

Once you put in the cart go through the address selection and even before you put you card number it will tell you if it ships outside the US or not.

Most of the times items sold directly through Amazon ship everywhere (with a few exceptions) and items sold on Amazon from third party stores have limits.

If you are buying anything from Amazon, use our Amazon Kindle order page to get into Amazon, this way we get a small commission on the sale ;)

Yeah, saw that. Bummer that, it's within the states only

But thanks for the tips anyways everyone. Hope sone retailers over our place can stock up one more batch someday. Can't afford to upgrade to X79 as I haven't got a chance to handle the full power of the X58 chipset.

Kinda lame though that they won't allow international shipping for the Core i7 990X, even though it isn't the heaviest or largest product, etc. You can't get them here anymore. And even if I can get some off eBay Australia, I can't guarantee, nor the last owners, that the CPU will run fine for the next 5 years due to some overclocking done previously, for example. That's why I would prefer brand new, "boxed" processors.

There is actually a page you can go to which lists only items which they might ship to you, so if you want to do that go to the AmazonGlobal page (note: GZ affiliate link) and it should only show you things which they ship internationally, though that's still no concrete guarantee they'll ship here (for example if the vendor has a local distributor - even through AmazonGlobal they will not ship Nikon).

I do have to correct one thing though, you will not be responsible for GST or Duties. Amazon pre-pays what they think it will be, and refunds the difference if they overestimated. If they underestimate (they're still using the 12.5% rate by the looks) they eat the difference.

But then again the only time I buy stuff from Amazon is when I want books that I can't get anywhere else like Book Depository (which sadly got bought out by Amazon, but hey, it's still free shipping!)
