Just wondering what everyone gets/has...

What are the normal and fastest download speeds people get with:
1) Gnutella/eDonkey type p2p programs
2) Bittorrent programs

And whats the best configuration people would recommend to get the best download results?

My p2p setup and regular results:

Program: Shareaza
Network: Gnutella, Gnutella2, eDonkey, Bittorrent
Router: D-Link DSL G604T
Plan: Woosh Orbit Flatrate
Average speed: 200kb
Fastest speed: 500kb (on new Woosh plan since being unleashed)
Fastest speed ever: 2000kb (on old xtra plan 2mb before being unleashed)
Firewall: Windows enabled with shareaza as exception, router firewall disabled
Other: UPnP enabled in both Shareaza and router, low port number

(Ive only had this plan for 2 days, so fastest and average speeds may increase)

Azureus.

speed changes ralitive to seeders etc so cant really give an average.

Top speed is around 170K but lately I've been limiting it to 75K so I can do other stuff as well - surf and downloads etc.

I'm on a 3.5M Ihug plan but I only get around 2M in reality.

Firewall is Dynalink WiFi enabled ADSL router uPnP on port 80 - I found 80 seems to get better speeds, I guess the traffic Nazi's may have a harder time seeing what it is.

I thought all of these - Gnutella, Gnutella2, eDonkey, Shareza - came with spyware.

I've been p2p-ing since Napster started and used many different clients etc and I find Azureus is a great little app. Have also been meaning to give utorrent a try though just haven't got round to it yet.

By the way a good start for torrents is scrapetorrent.com it gets its results from 5 different torrent sites.

Top speed of 170kB?...so downloads of roughy 1360kb? really...
Port 80, does that not interfere with anything else?

Spyware, no, some clients are affected yes, ya just got to know what ones are, Shareaza is completly clean, no spyware, adverts or bundled software...
Comparison of file sharing programs - Wiki

I too have being p2p-ing since Napster...over the years I have tried:
Napster
Bearshare
Blubster
Kazaa
DC++
Limewire
Frostwire
eDonkey
eMule
Bittorrent
Azureus
WinMX
iMesh
Grokster
Shareaza

And while I read many articles and forums about the success and speed of Bittorrent, I just dont like it...
Im interested in the speed, but its the fact ya have to go searching around torrent websites to find what ya want...the other p2p programs have the search built into the application and some like Shareaza, can return many results from mulitple networks, meaning a huge amount of results and users to connect to with good speeds...

If I could get speeds of 170kB on a regular basis, I would make the change...
But everytime Ive tried torrents in the past, the connections have been crap, even though I always look for torrents with the most seeds/connections etc....
Now something I did not know about Bittorrent, that may be the reason for my slow speeds, please tell me if this is true, if that to get the best speeds you must be uploading as well...makes sense, yet in my other non torrent programs, ya never had to anything more than 'share a folder'...easy....but in bittorrent programs, there is no 'sharing folder', but ya got to 'seed'???
It sounds the same, but I guess its gota be seeded to a particular website then as thats where the torrents are found???
And if people dont like the file, dont download, ya dont get ya good connection speeds, so ya forced to seed many popular files I guess???
What a pain!

To me its the simplicity of a program that I like...but I want the speeds also.

with Azureus on a good torrent I can get ~400kB/s consistently - pretty good as I can barely get 3000kb/s on a HTTP speed test
amule (a better emule client) depending upon sources, up to 300kB/s. I think I have only 3.5mbits of backhaul available in my area.

I don't use Windows or a D-link modem-router. At home it's 100% Linux, Xtra Pro Advanced and a PPP half bridge modem similar to DSE XH1179 except it's unbranded and from Taiwan.

Myself i have had the same sorta experiences. Same programs but ended on Azureus. Had ADSL, Cable, 500m 802.11b on an AP on citylink and now WiMax.

Best connection yet would be WiMax with Cable very close behide. Never had 2000kb with p2p though.

I think we need to remember about torrents are that most of them are limited to how your upload speed is going. Sadly doesnt make for a very fair test on most NZ ISP's.

I've always felt DC++ was the strongest program. If one picks the right ISP then local traffic can almost be unmatched and 'free'.

And because of this i feel even though i use Azureus right now because its so great for new things' i still feel deep down DC++ is the King.

Kez.
