The Norman Ross brand will soon be no more. I'm not sure if the Christchurch and Botany Downs stores are still open but the Palmerston North store is, and is loaded with some excellent clearance sales gear.

I got my Samsung Galaxy S3's there and am somewhat concerned about the status of the warranties. If you buy anything where warranty is important I'd suggest clarifying how these will be handled before you part with your cash.

You should still be covered by the manufacturer in NZ, as long as it wasn't parallel imported by the retailer. Aren't they associated in some way to Harvey Normans anyway? Our local norman ross closed down several years ago, and there were some very good deals at the time.

Norman Ross is a wholly owned subsidiary of Harvey Norman, I would assume the CGA obligations would pass on to them as the surviving entity. NZ law doesn't let a retailer jump out like that and leave everyone high and dry.

I don't believe you are correct here. Shareholders aren't liable under the CGA, the order of precedence is retailer then the importer/manufacturer. If the retailer goes away then liability transfers to the importer. This sort of thing is why subsidiary and limited liability companies are used. Happy to be corrected but I can't see how liability would legally be transferred.

Regardless of the legalities Harvey Norman would in all likelihood honour the warranties given that it would be a PR disaster if they didn't.

I can only speak for the Christchurch branch but they are having a 'closing down sale' too. Next month however they're being re-branded Harvey Norman, so here at least it's really just a rebranding and less of an actual closing down. That might be the case with all 3 of their stores.

I'm out near Rangiora myself, so I'm not sure what the bargains are or if they're worth an hour of driving for. Has anyone seen any of the deals?

Always found the chc store to be priced higher than its brother, which is odd for their discount market target audience. But of course they price match to HNs if you find it is the case.

If I recall reading, you can't have a 'closing down' sale unless you are actually closing the shop/brand. And appears they are doing so.

Explains why the HN temp warehouse in Hornby also has then, probably turn the NR site into furniture/homeware and shut down the even cheaper again storeroom shop behind the old hoyts site (which I may add, if you want tvs or white appliances, its by far cheaper to talk them down and take it from their store on the day directly from that wee shop)

Hmm. You may be right there - although I would imagine that, like you say, Harvey Norman wouldn't want to risk the blowback from refusing to honour purchases from what is essentially just another brand of theirs.

I'd say it's fairly unlikely to happen here in Palmy since the existing HN store isn't that far away. We don't really have the population here to justify two HN stores and the NR store is much, much smaller and certainly couldn't carry all the non-electrical stuff HN has. Unless they rebrand to Harvey Normal Electrical or similar...

The location of the Norman Ross store is awesome for consumers. Within about 200m walking distance of it you have DSE, Warehouse Stationery, Bonds, Noels and 100%. Makes getting good deals a lot easier!

Was in the Palmy NR yesterday and staff told me it will indeed it will be re-branded HN.

Some big TV's at very tasty prices but be aware this year's models are not far away...

Norman Ross has been closed in that building for quite a few years. It has now become a smiths city, and LV martins is right next door, which it also owns.

Both the Hornby furniture store and Carlyle warehouse store are fragments of the Moorhouse Ave store, so they'll be moving back into the renovated Moorhouse store very soon. Norman Ross at Tower Junction will be a simple name change / alteration of ranges carried I'm thinking.
