It was just a matter of time I suppose.

A group is calling for the Government to consider legalising multi-partner marriages.

The group set up a Facebook page just before the Marriage Amendment Bill passed through Parliament last week, legalising gay marriage.

A statement on the page described multi-partner - or polyamorous - marriage as "responsible, adult, committed non-monogamy," and said all committed loving relationships between adults regardless of number should be respected and given legal acknowledgement.

Why not?

I think this should have just as much importance as gay marriage. People should be able to do what they want.

Haha, sorry, not a chance in hell.

Monogamy is accepted as the way for most western religions, polygamy is still viewed as odd and weird by most. Popular support for it is non-existent so why on earth would ANY political group support it.

From a practical point of view, the legal and financial implications of supporting gay marriage would be nothing compared to polygamy. Trying to think of how it would work makes my head explode.

Yup, not enough support and a whole heap of inertia to overcome to make work legally.

Morally however, I've no problem with the concept.

Isn't everyone just sick of this rubbish wasting our politicians time?! They cost us enough money to sit in that chamber as it is. why bother them with rubbish like this? Gay marriage should have just been ticked off and be done with it. If a dude wants 5 wives then so be it. But dont muck around for months and months debating it.

Just like 'mondayising' the public holidays. Is it really THAT big a deal?!

10 years ago they would have said exactly the same thing about gay marriage (and many in the recent arguments still have)...and yet here we are.

The floodgates are now open.  Jesterz...I hope you will be very happy with your pig :-)

Chevrolux..the problem is the law and rights that support these issues.  No one but parliament can address these issues (i.e. I have 3 wives why can't I adopt a child, why am I being discriminated against? etc).

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Don't have a problem with it, but I doubt it will get much support from the community just yet. It took gay marriage a while to really take off before their cause gained any momentum in the public eye.

Give it another ten years. The more accepting, younger generation will be able to vote by then.

The concern I have with legislated marriage is that it is open to abuse from people who may want to use it as a way to, for example, cheat the welfare system or circumvent normal immigration procedures.

This is obviously a problem regardless of whether you're dealing with an opposite sex couple, a same sex couple, or a group, but the latter arguably presents more of a risk than a couple would.

Why not? Because this will be ignored completely by almost everyone.

The ever present marry animals examples are just really silly.

Polygamy is legal and culturally accepted in some arab and african countries. Not saying it's my cup of tea.

Polygamy was the norm for necessity, High child mortality rates, short life expectancy and high birthing mortality rates meant that this was a way of perpetuating the species. However like many things it become embroiled in religion either pro or anti.
it is not needed now to meet its original purpose, should it be allowed due to a belief I really don't see a logical reason to ban it, as long as it is not forced marriage it is one of those victimless crimes.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I realise your "sarc" tag indicates you're not being serious, but your pet pig can not provide an informed consent to join you in the marriage.  There in lies the difference.

I have no problem with poly marriages morally, from what I have seen poly marriages (official or not) work quite well a lot of the time.

Legally however it's a much MUCH harder problem to resolve than a simple two party marriage.

Probably not insurmountable, but there just isn't the impetus to tackle the problem yet - unfortunately for polyamorous people, that's just how it is you'll need to build your numbers up to a much larger faction before there is a big enough political pay off to do anything about it.
