You may remember me talking about having a big transformer tower in my backyard, well Transpower has sent me a letter stating they may add a "Buffer Corridor" to it. Now I have no idea what the hell this is.. will it take up a lot of space? etc?

I have attached a copy of the Frequently Asked questions sheet below, and if anybody could please shed some light on it, I'd be most grateful! Laughing

Thanks in Advance!

From how I read it, they just want to ensure theres a safe buffer around it so they can access it when needed - so dont build a shed within 12m of it etc blocking them from getting a crane in to replace or whatever...

It seems to be aimed at more rural than urban..... I take it youre rural ?

nope, in Massey, Auckland. So is it going to be an actual physical fence around the current fence of the transformer?

Unlikely, it is a planning restriction on what you can use the land around their towers/equipment for.

No flag poles or lightning rods in your backyard, but vege patches are probably OK :)

That's how I read it too.

You can't put a house there, or anything which may block access or get yourself to close to the wires.

They don't say you cannot use the land, or that you can't be inside the 'Red Zone' that extends 12 meters either side of the center of the cables, just that if you wanted to build something there, you would need resource consent.

Put a whole lot of Flouro tubes there - I hear they light up underneath high-voltage lines.
