Ok, so I start a new job next week. 3 weeks in 4 I'll be all over the country, and staying in hotels most of the week and back home for weekends. Quite often my day will be done around 2-3pm each day. So my question is, what to do with my time afterwards?

My colleague has done the role for the last five years and wished he'd made better use of it. Daylight hours I'm fine, I'll either have my golf clubs or mountainbike. However obviously it's not light all the time. I don't really want to just watch tv or drink!

I'm thinking about learning another language, I'm not really too keen on any formal extra curricular learning, but wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations for learning a language. I will be driving a lot, so will be able to listen to my iPod etc.

Has anyone done this before?

I think self learning a language could be hard work, but rewarding.

I've been learning Mandarin for about 7 months now and love it, but we have a tutor which I think is really useful as you can clarify and get feedback on stuff. You could use Audio books and what not in the car, but it's going to be one way learning.

On that note, get some good audio books or download some cool TED talks to listen to while you drive.

Ha I'm not much of a gamer. I have possibly owned the least used playstation and xboxs ever.

I'm leaning towards a language I think.

Call girls could teach you a variety of languages in-between courses I should think ;-)

What would you do if you were at home? Why should this be any different?

Mainly when I come home I'll cook, do domestic stuff etc.
Whereas I'll have more time in a hotel with kindle, laptop and probably a tv.

Mark: Call girls ?   ;-)

End of a hard day on a customer site in Melbourne. Sitting in my room, reading my book, waiting for 6:30 when my colleague and I had agreed to meet downstairs to head out to find somewhere to eat. And I hear a ... noise ... from the next room. It's very distracting and not at all fair to a single young man with no call girl in sight.

So I rang my colleague and explained we needed to go to dinner now.

Later that night, around 10:30, we dragged ourselves back to the hotel -- couldn't get too hammered as we needed to be functional the next day -- and when I get back into my room, I hear... the same noise. Still. As well as voices, discussing how they were out of strawberries now so what were they going to use next? So I put on my headphones to play some music and read a book for an hour and by then, blessedly, it had stopped.

And then, around 1:30, I am woken. By a noise. From the next room. Again. I put the headphones back on and left them on.

I like to think they ended up with octuplets out of that night. That would serve them bloody right.

This. Second CSB -- after four nights straight working on a different customer site, it was my colleague's turn on the Thursday night. But by this time I have developed, basically, jet lag, and at 10:30pm I am wide awake and unable to fall asleep. I remembered reading in the paper earlier that day a shop down on Symonds Street -- now a Chinese restaurant -- was opening at midnight to begin selling PlayStation 2s. So I went there and bought one, and a couple of games, and played PS2 games on the hotel TV till 3am.

That PS2 lived in my bag for the next 2 years, flying backwards and forwards between Sydney and Auckland every week. Always stayed in the same hotel just to be sure the TVs would work with it.
