Found this buddy in child room. It's just enormous monster for me. Although I understand that this is nothing in comparison to Australian spiders, I've never seen something with this size before in the wild.

Can you tell me what species is it?

Mid-size I'd say, compared to some really big ones I've seen around our place too.

My daughter doesn't like spiders, even though we tell her they're good to keep flies under control. We only kill white tails really, and try to capture anything else with a glass/paper and throw in the garden.

It looks like a "vagrant spider" - I found something similar in size and shape and Te Papa's spider expert kindly gave an ID for me via twitter. Was the biggest spider I've seen.

Fast moving nocturnal hunter - common around Wellington. They end up indoors sometimes in autumn.

We have plenty of those. Let me guess you live next to or near a native gully \ bushland ?

They are a harmless native NZ spider, they seem to die pretty fast once they come inside, ive only ever found 1 alive in the house (needed a big glass to catch it :) )

We get plenty of those here. Just normal spider. about 20 years ago had a spider on back door. The body was size of palm of my hand and legs were about 80mm long. collected it and rang Maf at the time and they werent interested. So I let it go in back hedge and never saw it again. Have never been able to find what it was. Many reckon it must have been Avondale but the body was bigger and more circular. I never had film for camera at the time and digital camera was not here then.

Yeah, I live near bushland here from April last year (so I missed previous season :) ). Thanks for info, next time will try to catch it with some cup and throw it away.

They're pretty common around our place in Khandallah. They tend to come inside a lot when the weather starts to cool towards winter.

One night in pitch black darkness while in bed, I was fumbling around reaching for my water bottle beside the bed. When I found it and lifted it up and brought it to my mouth something fell off onto my face.....it was large, and hairy.....

I have never moved so fast in my life. instantly I was upright and this thing was bouncing off my chest and arms and i managed to swipe it away with a good whack towards the wall where it made a really loud bang as it hit! I switched on the light and saw this thing whose body was the size of a $2 coin...so imagine the length of the legs coming off that!

I somehow got rid of it but it was a long time before i was asleep again. Next morning I was on the phone with the landlord arranging to have the house nuked and we've been fine ever since. I get it nuked each year now!

Been loads this year with the warm weather. We sprayed all the windows, eaves etc. with No Bugs last week, which does a reasonable job of keeping them at bay for up to six months. You also need to put a bomb in your loft space for really effective control, but between the bomb and No Bugs, it comes to about $50.

I saw one of those at my house the other day, was living in the gaps of the bricks/ceiling by front door. Never seen anything like it before in NZ. I unloaded a can of flyspray on it, i hate spiders.

Worse one I've seen was when I was sitting on the sofa quietly reading a book suddenly noticed I could HEAR a spider running over the carpet!

I'm a "catch them in a glass and release them" type of person ... except white tails, they get poison gas!
