I'm going into my next stage of my hat phase having tried out a cheapy Fedora Trilby. Wanting something a bit higher quality.

Anyone here recommend a good hat supplier in New Zealand ?? thinking about spending $50-$70

Just to be clear, do you want a fedora (Indiana Jones) or a trilby (like at the races)? They are not the same thing, of course.

There's a hat maker in Auckland (I'll see if I can find the name) that has produced some lovely hats for friends.

Personally, I tend to wear cheaper ones as i am fairly easy to please, but a good Fedora made by hand will set you back a few bucks.

You could try hatworx.com. but unsure of the quality. Price seems to be in your sweetspot though

May I recommend Lock & Co in St James's Street next time Sir is in London?

freitasm: Fedora != Trilby

A quote from thefedoralounge.com

"In the UK, "trilby" has historically been the word used for the USA "fedora"
(analogous to UK rubbish/USA garbage or trash) and is widely thus used today.
The word "fedora" has only re-crossed the Atlantic eastwards in the last 25 years or so -it was NOT used here for what Americans call fedoras in the 1940s, and I don't remember coming across it until the 1980s at the earliest. "

That sort of thing will have my seconds calling upon you to arrange a time and place to settle this with swords!

From Wikipedia

"The London hat company Lock and Co. describes the trilby as having a "shorter [viz., narrower] brim which is angled down [snapped down] at the front and slightly turned up at the back" versus the fedora's "wider brim which is more level [flatter]." The trilby also has a slightly shorter crown than a typical fedora design"

Don't buy a cheap hat, if you buy a proper hat it will last your lifetime.

Buy yourself a proper nz made wool-felt hat http://www.hillshats.co.nz/collections/wool-felts

Hmmmm I thought Fedora Trilbys were just a fedora style variant (ie Fedora with narrow brim).

Looking for this style here.

Hmmmm do they do anything in between ? I consider myself a Hipster Gangster with a love of Jazz music...

Perhaps I buy 2, one for Jazz Festivals\Robbing Banks and one for walking around town.

In all seriousness, it looks like im a Trilby fan.
