I am after some advice, I have been asked by several people to write about my journey and battles with my illness and disabilities as they feel it maybe helpful to others. Blogging is something I know little about, could the fine
folk here that know about this advise me of the software for this and the best place(s) to host a blog of this nature?

Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org are two differing products.... wordpress.com you dont need to keep upgraded as its handled by Wordpress.

Wordpress.org is the self hosted package, and yes, keeping that upto date is highly recommend :) (And dont go too overboard on plugins)

WordPress.com, you are limited on themes and plugins though, so if you want to customize the blog beyond the basics, you'd be better off with self hosted one.

You can create the blog on Geekzone and use your own domain name...

It just not as easy to configure a theme. If you go Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal or whatever just remember to keep it up to date because they have so many vulnerabilities..

Not as conventional but Tumblr is another good simple blogging tool.

The hosted version will automatically update won't it? It is only the open sourceone which you need to keep upto date yourslef.

I would personally recommend googles blogger instead. Many blogs I have seen use blogger and they seem to rate better in search engines, perhaps because it is run by google.  It may not have the features of wordpress, but that can be a good thing. Wordpress is actaully a good web design CMS, rather than just a blog.
