I'm trying to work out how companies such as Corelogic (who own qv.co.nz) get the property sales data they sell. On QV's website they state that they get information from public resources:

Where is the information sourced?
Corelogic New Zealand Limited (CoreLogic NZ) maintains a national property database which holds information on every property in New Zealand. We receive property information and sales data as part of the District Valuation Roll (DVR) from each of the councils in New Zealand, and we update our database regularly. We also receive Certificate of Title information from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), this is updated regularly.
How can this information be made available to the public?
Both the information from the councils and from LINZ is classified as Public Register Information and Public Register Supporting Information. Therefore, the information can be made available to any member of the public who wishes to search the information.

The way I understand this is that the data they sell on qv.co.nz is classified as public data. Considering it's public data shouldn't the public also be provided free access this?

I'm not actually looking for the sales information on a specific property, I'm just trying to work out the logistics and flow of information behind it.

I have written to Auckland council, but haven't heard back.

Any ideas?

If it is from the land transfer records - and I suspect it is, then this information publically available but the governed dept (Linz) charges to provide this info ($15).

http://www.linz.govt.nz/land/land-records/order-title

Turns out public info does not equal free info

Your best way to get title history for free is to ask a real estate agent.

All the agents have access to this info as they pay a annual fee for this.

The data is free. The staff time providing it isn't..!

On that note.

There was a website awhile ago that matched up all the various data available on houses. You could click a map of any house and see who owned it, etc.

Anyone know what happened to that, it just disappeared one day. It needs to make a come back.

Local council rate info has most ownership info (I believe you can opt out of displaying it these days)

The Dunedin City Council has all this info online, although you can have your name & postal address hidden by request (the first thing I did after buying my latest house). It also shows the price paid for any sales in the last 3 years which is very useful for seeing what the market's doing in your area (and doesn't cost unlike QV). I'm not sure which other councils do this but I know the Christchurch City Council definitely don't.

I believe that Land Information NZ Gather he sales data, not sure of source.  Noted also reordered by Real Estate Institute members.

At work we have access to Local council contractor GIS that has property owner and rate payer information, for our council the public GIS (website) does not.
We also have licensed GIS software that we can access ownership and recent sales information, previously Terraview now using Quickmap.

Surveyors tend to use LINZ Landonline.

http://watchmystreet.co.nz/ has a good chunk of the info, _if_ you are in a supported area, which is pretty much just Wellington.

The http://watchmystreet.co.nz/about page also explains some of the rortiness of the QV situation.

I just found out that Tauranga council also provides historic sales data. It seems like it's just a council by council decision.
