Hi

Could someone please advise a dry venue hire i.e. catering not required and i want to bring my own alcohol. I am looking around lower hutt and wellington area. It is 100 people. If the venue can provide other things like chairs, tables etc that's great otherwise i am ok to hire that.

Cheers

K

We looked at the Dowse - good facilities, can BYO food and/or drink (they have cafe/catering facilities too) and can provide staff as needed. Well priced too in comparison with other options, with a bit off if you're a Hutt ratepayer - give them a shout.

There aren't many that meet your requirements. Selling alcohol makes a bit more money for them. You'll find any venue that allows this will be lower end or not set up for weddings.

The Boat Shed, Wellington Waterfront (best option, check capacity).

The Rowing Club, right beside The Boat Shed (likely too small).

Lower Hutt town hall (ugly), and similar public places. All will likely be pretty ugly.

Silverstream Retreat (maybe BYO).

Botanic Gardens, the greenhouse bit. Though that has a cafe attached so not 100% sure, and probably too small.

Tarureka Estate, maybe (worth asking anyway).

A marquee somewhere - but you need space, portable flooring, power, etc.

Tea Gardens @ Massey, but that may have closed.

People think wedding prices are jacked up. In general it's not profiteering, it's that there are certain expectations around quality, service, fittings, etc that come with weddings that mean the price is higher.

If Martinborough is not too far, there are several places over here.

@timmmay's list is pretty exhaustive.

Some of the council venues have catering/no catering options too:

One we looked at that is actually quite cool as was done up a few years back was Kandallah Town Hall.  In the end the Wife made me go over the hill (Wairarapa) but I would have been quite happy with the town hall.

The Botanical gardens was another one on the radar, what put me off there was you cant move anything.  They have big ugly seats which must stay in position.  Also you cant get in there until quite late, plus its public as hell!

As I said, your requirements will force you into lower end venues, which may be cheaper but you'll probably spend a bunch of money decorating and then cleaning. Remember you'll need others to do the decorating, at the last minute, as you'll be busy getting ready and you only get them for the period you pay for. Same with cleaning, not something you want to do day after your wedding.

Hi I am happy to pay for cleaning and deco but i need catering from outside(Indian), none of the catering companies would cater for the kind of food i want so that is my main issue.

Oh just remembered these guys do weddings at Wellington College Halls pretty cool old buildings and may be able to fit in with your external food requirements.
