So I want to start using my Nexus 5X for mobile payments and it doesn't look like my current bank BNZ are going to release anything anytime soon. I want to open up a new account with another bank and I am wondering whether to go with ANZ or ASB?

It looks like they both charge the same for an account and debit card so is one banks app better then the other or more supported? Does either bank have a better implementation or more features?

Anything to help decide between the two would be very much appreciated. :)

Go Money supports the Nexus 5X (ANZ) and if you go for the Freedom account and have your pay deposited into your account each month (at-least $2500) you get no account fees, otherwise the Go Account can come with a Visa Debit card fee of $10 p.a. ASB's offering is quite new (pre-release) so may take them a while to build up a device compatibility list, I have not seen a proper launch yet and I believe at the moment it is in pre-release.

ANZ's offering works extremely well however and they've been in the game for around a year but, I may be a little bias since I work for them - just thought I'd put that disclaimer out there :) Also, both banks offer extremely good apps being both an ANZ and ASB customer myself.

So as a disclaimer I work for ASB. ASB Virtual is not in pre-release but out in the wild. It is available on Android phones 4.4 and above, that have NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled and I can personally tell you that it works with the Nexus. Although there is a declaimer if you have rooted the phone.

Also check out card control which is very cool and allows you to set limits and turn off and on certain transaction types instantly.

+1 for ANZ, what I like about ANZ's offering is the fact that the virtual cards get their own PINs.  Also unlike ASB's (which I've noticed to Stop Responding once already) the ANZ app actually puts a 'Check payment terminal' notification in the notification drawer as an acknowledgement that it worked, it will go Orange if there was an error - which can help understand the odd declined transaction.

Only negative for ANZ is that it seems to always require data on, whereas ASBs seems to have an offline mode, also with auto-updates, a 3am update cycle on the phone could have you getting woken up by a notification begging you to open & login to the gomoney app to reactivate the wallet.

Thanks for info. So does ASB supports any Android 4.4 phone with NFC while ANZ has a whitelist in addition?

I stumbled across this thread recently and also received a notification from ASB that this functionality was now available. I decided I would try using my phone as a card. I am an ASB customer with a Nexus 5.

In summary, it was a painless experience to get it working and has worked like a charm from the first time I tried a transaction. Combine that with all the flexible and user-friendly features of the ASB Mobile App I can highly recommend it. Besides which, it's quite cool to not need to carry my wallet around.
