http://www.theladbible.com/now/weird-a-lot-of-countries-are-much-smaller-than-people-know-20160817

I first saw this in an episode of The West Wing, but it's cropped up again and thought I would share this here. Video is so much more interesting than desk analysis (i first saw the discrepancies in land mass sizes when I was at uni many years ago).

Brazil, huh.

Saw this on Gizmodo the other day - quite cool. Website here to play with.

Surprising how 'small' Russia is (and Canada) compared to how absoloutely massive they appear on a Mercator map.

The other surpirsing one is how small Continental Europe is - Grab France and put it between AU and NZ.

Frightening when you see that the land mass of the UK in the video is smaller than NZ, yet the UK contains about 65 million people and NZ only about 4.5 million! NZ is about 20,000 sq km bigger.

I always find it crazy how many people live in Japan, 127 million! It has an area of 377,000 sq km vs NZ's 270,000 sq km but Japans's also more mountainous.

 Amazing stuff...

The distance between NZ and Australia is more than most people realise - the comparison I've always liked is it's about the same distance as across the whole of Europe - London to somewhere between St Petersburg and Moscow (roughly).

And I find it amazing that the south of Sweden (Malmo) is closer to Milan in Italy than the north of Sweden.

Just shows there is plenty of room for these immigrants Winston is always moaning about. Well, assuming we can learn to build houses at a rather faster rate than we do now.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

That's an odd one. It makes the UK and France look similar in size, which they certainly never seemed to be when I was driving around either of them!

We'd also have to be happier about living on top of each other in small apartments rather than everybody wanting their "quarter acre paradise" because not many people in Japan are living that classic old Kiwi dream.

Pretty sure we have enough space to give at least another 2 million people a quarter acre 'paradise' each!

Never understood that - you can hardly swing a dead cat in quarter of an acre. A decent house floor plan would occupy 33% of that for a start - never mind the drive, garage etc.
