Prison numbers are rising, always have been, what to do?

While like many topics there is a political involvement, this thread is more about our ideas, not what either party will do.

My opinion is that there is a relationship between society and crime. If society creates more crime, more will be imprisoned. If we improved society less will be imprisoned. Easy to say, hard to do. Increasing sentences doesnt seem to stop crime. As Bridges said, if you reduce sentences to reduce prison numbers, you will get more crime as these people are free to act.

Set sentences that have a deterrent factor, if thats longer, lock them up for longer. Prison costs are a cost in a modern society. Also, work hard to help criminals refer, ONLY IF THEY GENUINELY WANT TO. Give a lot of support for this, but drop it like a rock if any criminal is playing with this tool.

Whatever my opinion created if implemented, just measures one cost of a modern society. Haves and have nots, temptation.

Stop jailing people for drug use.

Supply/manufacture is another thing, but being an addict?

Bring back the death penalty. Serial killers and child harmers are not curable.

Realise, that as the population increases so does the percentage of criminals.

Get the correction Minister to open his eyes and ears..the large prison that was planned and then halted was stupid. As our population grows of course our prison numbers will grow and our population has grown the last 10 years at a large rate and shows no sign of slowing despite promises.

NZers want criminals off our streets. It must be real tough being a victim of a crime...so to ask that they get put away for a respectable period is not to hard a task.

Our prisons by and large are ancient and we simply have not built prison cells at sufficient a rate to take into account of our growth.

I would rather spend the money on Police , Nurses , Teachers ETC..... not to house low lifes

Death penalty for the worst and export any that are not citizens. I think Aussie have the second point correct, just wish we would do the same but we are namby pamby PC whimps.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

i must be in the minority but locking up people for sake of making other people feel better is a waste of time and doesnt tackle the problem of rising crime,. Most crime is done buy the same people over and over again and locking them up again and again isnt working, you only have to look at Norway to see how it could be handled and the benefits to all society it provides , it will never happen here but it should .

Better resourcing of the Police and courts. If someone who is considering a crime, thinks that they will never be caught. Long sentences or other punishments are not a deterrent to them. But if they think that there is a high chance that they will be caught. Then long sentences are a much bigger deterrent.

Save on costs by sub contracting prisoner housing to countries like China, Thailand, Brazil etc. But only do so for prisoners who have been caught, sentenced, released. And then caught again for the same serious crime.

If you have been convicted twice for separate instances of the same crime. The judge should have the ability to hand out much tougher sentences. And I would include the death penalty and sterilization as options as well.

Only making such sentences available for second time convictions is to avoid the possibility of someone getting the death penalty or sterilization who is actually innocent. As it would be extremely unlikely that you could be wrongly convicted twice for separate instances of the same crime.
