So, the EU has just decided to facilitate the end of DST with effect from April next.

By then, all EU States will have to decide whether to continue with it, or stick with one time and decide which one that is.

Russia abandoned it some time ago I think.

What is the GZ view on whether NZ should consider sticking with one time, and if you support that idea, which time - Summer or Winter?

Stick to one time. I really don’t care which, but if forced I’d pick “Summertime “ as that has dark mornings (in winter) but more regularly lighter (useable) evenings.

Heh, I was about ready to point out cows can't read time. And ready to mock those who jump on the 'it fades the curtains' bandwagon who can and just need to pull them earlier if that's the worlds greatest concern

(I can't believe people use it as a legitimate excuse.. along with fading carpet. What the..)

Definitely keep summer daylight savings time for me.

I wonder whether where in this long country you live affects your opinion.

I live in deep south getting to and from in pitch dark for most of winter is depressing so long summer evenings are a boon for me.

Causes issues for those who live in Goldcoast, but work on the NSW side (and vice versa). The divider is also down the middle of a street, so either side can end up with out of hours work depending on which they choose to follow.

(And those flying out from Coolangatta living NSW side.. From the north you also cross the boarder when going to the airport around the south and back up)

Everybody in Brisbane wants a DST just for the SE corner of Queensland - it's a logistical nightmare for corporate workers when you're in a different timezone to everybody in Sydney and Melbourne.

The State Govt won't do it though.

I love DST, it gives us the maximum amount of daylight every day, if we have summertime we would have sunrise at 8.30am in the middle of winter and that is not much fun.

In the peak of summer the sun rises before 6am so if we kept winter hours it would be up before 5am and that is not fun.

I really enjoy the summer evenings so I really do not want it to change.

Just because someone else does it does not mean we have to follow.

I like daylight savings but wish it was only from spring equinox to autumnal equinox. In those extra few weeks (pushed through by Peter Dunne I think) the days aren't long enough to have any daylight to 'save'.

Right. But farmers get up an hour earlier and milk the cows an hour earlier and do everything an hour earlier in summer than in spring/autumn/winter, which upsets the stock, and reduces their yield.

To be fair, Australia does have a genuine problem.
Most of Queensland and all the NT are so far north that they get close to 12 hours each of day & night throughout they year: they don't really have any "extra" summer daylight to "save".
But QLD & NSW being an hour different does make for some difficulties, particularly for those close to the border. OTOH, Adelaide is always half an hour different to Sydney & Melbourne and seem to manage OK.

Things have actually improved, the Tasmaniacs used to have a fortnight or so more DST than NSW & VIC, so there were times of the year every year when there were six time zones in Australia: TAS; VIC, ACT & NSW; SA; QLD; NT; and WA. Tasmania now has the same dates as NSW, ACT & VIC, so in winter there are only three zones (East, Central & West) but in summer there are 'only' five: TAS, VIC, ACT & NSW; SA; QLD; NT; and WA.

In all my years of shift work I mostly, luckily, worked the short spring forward shift. Never got paid less of course.

Leave DST as is. 💤

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

That was going to be my intention of mentioning it. They run on daylight, and those tending have to adjust around it regardless. Not to mock that portion, only the latter.
