Wondering what people's opinions are of the rejection of the government offer and the teacher strikes.

Disclaimer I am a teacher but work at an independent school so not allowed (even if I wanted to) be part of the PPTA. And we do get a lot of the benefits public school teachers are striking for, eg higher pay, small classes, less contact hours.

I have worked public and things like class size and workload can be intense.

Let's start paying techers like we pay nurses... Then they could strike for a valid reason!

Totally justified for them to strike for better pay and conditions.

We're lucky in private sector where we can just look for work at competing companies if underpaid. Teachers don't have that luxury as effectively their whole industry is controlled by Government. Striking is the only leverage they have, short of leaving the industry and leaving our kids with no-one to teach them.

The teachers, nurses, trainee doctors etc all deserve better conditions and/or money.
But the pay issues have been building for many many years.
They all sat quietly under a national government and did nothing.

They have pounced on the Labour coalition and have already gained a fairly large (by most standards) initial deal with promise of more negotiation with next years budget in mind. However, nothing but a magic bullet fix right now will do.

National is positively gleeful about the fact they can look sad for the teachers and agree they need more money and also kick the government for the inevitable budget blowouts that will occur. Not a peep from anyone about who has created this situation over a decade or so before.

Mike Hosking (national party spokesman) is already bleating about the current government's money management skills and overspending .

Yeah but what about performance evaluation and pay for performance? I don't know a lot about all this but my understanding is these do not exist and that they cannot be implemented because of the union. Poor teachers get paid as much as great ones and poor teachers can't be got rid of?

I assume so. Its not easy to get a new job at a better school as most schools are Government run

Exactly. Simon was like that the other day, complaining about mismanagement of education. That tells me that the education sector was a place of bliss and happiness until the last election. Then it suddenly became underpaid and overworked. So much for ownership, responsibility and New Zealand

I am 100% in full support of Teachers if it will help my child be in an environment where her teacher cares about their job and will nurture her to her best abilities.

However, I've lost count on how many strikes that have happened this year and it is really starting to affect my pocket now with organising daycare which isn't cheap and/or using my annual leave to accommodate.

I can assure you schools are not run by the government. They are run by a board who employs a principal to take care of the day to day stuff. There are good schools to work for and bad schools to work for and it isn't just the students. Working for bad managers makes for a poor work environment regardless of the clients (students).
