Hi guys and gals,

I've been asked to identify what this photo is about.

I have no clues, just this photo.

I have ruled out a device for making haystacks.

But now I am stumped.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have wondered if it's for lifting power/phone poles into position.

But then... where is the pole?

Where is the hole for the pole?

Is the angle of the top wire too oblique (is that the word?)?

Some sort of dragline winch or excavator..... a line appears to go off to the right from the top pulley....

The boss is well dressed  πŸ˜€

My first thoughts were either a pulley system for clearing logs from fields or a drilling system of some description. Energy HQ feature a not too dissimilar machine on their rig evolution page.

Maybe it's John Ross "Jock" Ewing Sr. πŸ˜„

@gordy7 the boss is clearly not part of the operation!

I have noticed that wire heading off from the top pulley. That is the one I think is too oblique for poles.

@dratsab There is just 1 guy turning a crank by hand so maybe not drilling?

Why would the top pulley need to be so high if just for pulling something along the ground?

Possibly there is a river embankment that the dragline has to reach over..... it is a bit difficult to get a proper perpective from the photo...

I think it is the machine that pulls the hyperloop cars.  Elon is supervising.

I wonder if it's a post rammer. That line might go off into the distance to be pulled by a horse or group of urchins.

Any clues on where or when the picture was taken or any other background?

- field in the background looks heavily ploughed
- there are some vertical posts in the background almost like vineyard row headers
- buildings and sheds remind me of Pukekohe
- there are sacks on the trailer maybe fillled with some agricultural crop harvested from the field
- height could be require to pull the length of the field

Is that a low stone wall in the foreground or a bund of some kind? This looks unusual.

Scrap my suggestion, I see the winder on the tray.

With such bracing and mechanical advantage, it's got to be for something you can't tow with a horse and something that requires a lot of force but over a short distance, otherwise he'll be winding till the cows come home.

Anything to do with Kauri logging and gum diggers?

What are rock type things on the cart?

Whatever he is pulling with the winch cable isn't likely to be very heavy. A single person turning that winch, plus the relatively weak structure of the rest of it, suggests to me that it would not be feasible to move significant weight like a tree.

It could be lifting cables - such as telegraph or power - between poles although those would tend to run parallel to the road rather than cross it.

Maybe stringing hop wires?

@gzt  there is a high probability the picture has something to do with Pukekohe.

The person who belongs to the photo comes from around those parts, well Franklin at least anyway.
