Apparently Aussies are paying double to triple NZ wages and offer cheaper housing (outside of urban Sydney and Melbourne) according to this

Wakrak:

"We've never seen anything like it.

Australia "poaching" skilled workers from NZ when their economy runs hot is nothing new...

The last big outflow was in the 2012 mining boom, and it looks like there is about to be another minerals supercycle over the next few years that will again pour huge amounts of $$$ into OZ... the danger for NZ is that this time we can't refill the tank from other countries, ... but on the plus side a migration outflow reduces housing market pressure...

"A record number of people left for Australia last year with 53,200 heading across the Tasman, Statistics New Zealand says.
And while 13,800 people moved here from Australia, that wasn't enough to also avoid an annual record net loss of 39,500. (numbers are rounded)"

Not even. You can quote a paragraph and link to source but the whole article is simply infringing their copyright.

Plus rents are decreasing in inner city apartments. On average I heard, workers can earn 30 percent more. Australia is calling out for workers at the moment, and NZs house prices have locked many NZers who don't own a house out of ever owning one. So I wouldn't be surprised if NZ has a major Brain Drain again. I remember that this caused a man drought in NZ for a period. History often repeats, and NZ has some major problems moving forward, as we have become far too expensive, and the rich have gotten richer out of Covid, and the poor and average non homeowner is worse off. Obviously there are some negatives with living in Australia, so people should do their own research into this.

As a senior nurse in Sydney in 2013-14 tax year I earned double what I earned in my first tax year back in NZ 2014-15.

My brothers youngest 41yr son has been working the mines in WA since early 2000's started from nothing with no skills or qualifications except 5th form NZ School Cert. He is now a mines project manager and pulls over $250,000/yr and his wife is a mines geologist and earns about the same.

My nieces 19yr son has just started work in the mines in WA, via the afore mentioned uncle. No skills or qualifications except NZ NCEA and the, must pass, compulsory mining pre-employment intro courses provided by the employer. He is now earning as a bottom of the ladder employee $105,000/yr. They are 12 hour shifts starting at 0500 and he FiFo's up from Perth. Not to sure about how many days on/off.

If he keeps it up he will be on the Perth property ladder before he his 25yr.

On the basis of this post, one has to ask why you moved here if that is not being too personal.

Most publications syndicate everything they can to boost profits. You can often find a paywalled article somewhere else by searching for the headline or part of the main text.

This. Moved back from Australia (granted, suburban Sydney) in 2019 and haven't looked back. I'm even earning more now than I was, and we're far happier. Australia works for some people, especially if you have family or citizenship over there. Others, not so much.

For starters we did not plan on staying for the 30 yrs that we did. But to answer your question, retirement and extended family.

I remember reading an article in the late 1990s at some point where apparently over 600 people (or families?) were leaving NZ for Australia every week, and the then-National government weren't doing a whole lot about it.

I could be wrong on some of that information, it was a long time ago.

I thought this was common knowledge tbh, the salaries are generally higher and housing cheaper in Aussie, been thinking of moving for a while now but then again the animals and people there are a negative and how you are classed as a second rate human is also not very encouraging.

The big Brain Drain was about 10-15 years ago, as it was a key to National winning the lection in 2008. Here is an article about it http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/7779840/Key-changes-tack-with-brain-exchange-tag

. It was counteracted by increasing migration into NZ, which then created it's own problems, with the lack of housing, and billions needed to be spent playing catchup on infrastructure. I think we are heading for a Brain Drain 2.0, mainly due to the relatively poor pay on average, and the insane house prices, meaning a lifetime of renting for some, which is just paying off someones mortgage, or creating those landlords a passive income.
