I am sending emails out on behalf non profit and in the past have been using Mailchimp. Unfortunately I have exceeded their free limit and are looking for an alternative email service that can cope with a weekly send of around 5000 emails.

Any suggestions as to a free service or alternatively as cheap as possible as I would be stuck with the cost.

Why not set up up multiple mail chimp accounts? If sending that many emails are you not able to monetise it in some way to cover the cost?

Re Amazon service not sure what they mean by having something hosted by Amazon. Presumably that would be a paid service?

Not sure that Mailchimp would approve. I have no idea if they can detect multiple accounts or whether they would just ignore. No way I can monetize the sending of the emails

SES is far from turn key for this usage, and yes there would be a cost.

I think you'll have a hard time finding something free for the numbers you're talking about. Did you see Mailchip offer a discount for non-profits?

I recommend SMTP2Go to users of my software. For the volume you require, it'd be $US15 per month.

I like them because their pricing is simple. Some providers have complex pricing based on the number of mailing list recipients (which I assume only apply if you use those features) and e-mails.

You could DIY for about $5 per month, but then you have to deal with IP reputation issues etc.

Using Elastic Email for transactional emails and that is working alright. I know they have a marketing product and they are not badly priced.

Check out their Email Marketing Pricing

Sendgrid is another possibility, but they are more expensive.

With the volume you are sending I doubt you will find any free services and the cheaper you go the more likely you are to end up sharing resources with spammers.

I have had a look at SMTP2Go and need some help. I use Gmail as my private mail system but if I want to use that with SMTP2Go they point out it will still be limited to Googles  25 messages per day which would be useless. Can you recommend a better email client to use that would enable a better throughput

Thanks

While I'm not sure how you have things configured, you would send directly via SMTP2Go (or another provider). There is some domain configuration required, as per their instructions, but once you've done that any application that sends via SMTP can be used. As a desktop client, I use Thunderbird, and for notification e-mails I use CMail.

Avoid older versions of Outlook as iOS clients didn't like the MIME layout and images failed to show in some e-mails. Recent versions work fine.

So I could use a client like Thunderbird just for the non profit emails and point it to SMTP2Go smtp address and it will work. Can I also leave Gmail as my reply address and that way any replies will come into my Gmail system

I would recommend using your own domain if at all possible. SPF can be worked around as it uses the envelope address, which isn't necessarily the one that appears in the headers, but few clients will let you set the envelope address. DKIM uses From address, so Google servers would need to sign the message for DKIM checks to pass. You could use the GMail address in the reply-to address, which Thunderbird does allow you to set. In that case, messages would come from your domain (E.g. From: no-reply@yourdomain.com), but replies would be directed to your GMail account.

Ok That should not be a problem I will have a go with their free version and see what I can achieve. Thanks for your help
