The government should have gone with a three week lockdown with a review towards the end nationwide instead of one week for Auckland/Coromandel/North Island because I think people knew it wasn't going to be that short and it would have made it easier for businesses to plan and manage for a three week lockdown.

Disagree, it will always be a moving target. 3 weeks, then the one case ends up an isolated one with little spread and its looks stupid. If everyone knew it will be longer, then plan on that basis.

These days everywhere has BCP's, it should not be hard to move in or out of, a lockdown

According to Barry Soper the MoH advice to Cabinet was 2 weeks right from the get-go.

I wouldn't be surprised as I believe Bloomfield also alluded this.

The thing is the lockdown is somewhat political as well. Telling people outright we're going into a 3 week lockdown for one case will just rile people up. Now we obviously know that it was never going to be just one case but...

I think this plays a big part of the communication.  Even if cabinet decided on 3 weeks from day 1. They might not want to communicate it that way as it could cause lots of people to "rebel". Certainly some people and organisations would love the certainty of the time spelled out from day one. However; cabinet need to balance the compliance risks.

I do wish our media would not say "lockdown until <insert date>" and would say "lockdown at least until <insert date>".
