My parents retired & moved to that area (100 km south of Tampa) in 1979.

Inland, the houses were one-level, on level sections (everything in Florida is level ;-)

On the coastline (eg: Manasota key), all houses had a lower level that could be storm-swept. Living space was on the second level, above an often empty pole structure or storage for cars & utility space. Nobody expected it to remain dry when a big storm hit.

Even inland, the guy who built the house (for my parents) left them with big plywood 'shutters' that could be nailed up in the advent of a hurricane. All the floor-to-ceiling windows and ranchsliders had their emergency protection - just standard operating procedure.

I am in Orlando in a not quite Disney hotel right now enjoying a beautiful Disney day 😜

Bit rainy, bit windy but nothing serious yet.

When we checked in staff advised us to have 2 days of food and water, and torches in case of power cuts. Building has gennies so unlikely to be needed but better to have I guess.

Walmart was semi rationing cases of water yesterday and canned meals there and at the local supermarket were basically cleared out.

What made it really real was when Disney closed!

Just watched a bit of a livestream from a guy driving through Florida somewhere on a deserted highway at night - passing abandoned trucks and such.
He was speaking with someone on a headset, because he was answering questions, which couldn't be heard - just his answers were audible.

At one stage, his truck was being sand-blasted (he mentioned it) and it looked particularly dangerous to be out there.

Not sure why he was out, or what he was achieving other than to stream the live blackness.

So that's where the producers of the Deutsche Wochenschau ended up!

(The Wochenschau was the "news" bulletin in Germany until 1945, which somehow managed to present Russian tanks in the suburbs of Berlin as a sign of the Wehrmacht's impending victory.  This really does read like a lot like a Wochenschau script).

CokemonZ: Building has gennies

... in a sub-basement ...

Either that or they were last test run in 1986 when they were installed.

There were some concerns at Duke's 'decommissioned' Crystal River Florida plant with Hurricane Helene last month:

Bloomberg: Floodwaters from Hurricane Helene have swamped a retired Duke Energy Corp. nuclear power plant, according to a filing with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, though an escape of contaminated fuel appears unlikely. The Crystal River plant, which has been shuttered since 2013, experienced a storm surge of as much as 12 feet, according to the filing, which was posted online. “The whole site was flooded, including buildings, sumps, and lift stations. Industrial Wastewater Pond #5 was observed overflowing to the ground due to the surge,” according to the report, which was filed Friday, the day after Helene roared ashore.

There is a proposal to build a another one in Levy County 30 miles away and 20 miles from the coast.
